GOURLAY BUTCHERS IN DUNDEE
« on: Tuesday 16 August 11 16:52 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out where a butcher shop was situated in Dundee (1920's/1930's)  It could have been on the Hilltown!
All the info I have is  - Gourlay, butchers No. 64
I tried Dundee Directories, but the latest I could find on line was 1912
Maybe some older Dundonians out there might recall the shop

Dear Jenc

My granduncle, Kirriemuir born, Andrew Bennett Gourlay 1878-1929 was a butcher as was his Forfar born son, Andrew Gourlay b1899, so maybe the latter had his own shop.

I've just sent an email to my second cousin in England who is the latter's niece referring her to this post. Maybe, she will have some information for you.

Now I know who jenc is. Thanks Jennifer, great photograph. I have sent my email to second cousin Linda. She is yet to reply. She is a niece of 1899 Andrew.

I have corresponded with Ronald McCaffer previously and through him heard of Gordon. I presume that the ACG they refer to is Andrew Cairns Gourlay, Ronald's grandfather.

I'll pass the photograph to Linda, it may help with the identification.

regards

I have a 1890 born Peter Gourlay in my tree. Born Auchterhouse, Forfarshire, but no occupation known. I also have a c1891 Peter but have his occupation as a nurse. Both a suitable age.

Hi all, and many thanks to everyone, what a team!
Ev and Snowolf, you are so right regarding the Hawkhill.....on reflection I had been thinking that 64 Hilltown was too steep to have been the site of the shop  The photographer's studio was situated at the end of town where Hawkhill stood, so it all fits into place :)
I think John, that Peter born 1890 in Auchterhouse is our man.......his brother was Andrew Cairns Gourlay, probably the reason it is in the possession of the McCaffers :)
I will let them know and once again big thanks to all
Best wishes from Jen
