Hello Bessant,

Lovely to hear from you. Yes, I had come to the conclusion too that the 'Waterloo' story must be a red herring.

I live in North Somerset. My grandfather was Alfred Moses Reed born in Resolven, Glamorgan in 1880, son of Moses and Ann Reed. I only began the Reed tree a couple of years ago and have only gone back as far as my 3 x gt grandfather, Richard Reed. I don't know when or where he was born. Do you know if this is this the Richard (Bevan) Reed who died in Cardiff Gaol in 1840?

Regards,

Millymollymandy  :)

Hi all
I am the granddaughter of Thomas Reed who was Moses Reed's grandson (see 1911 census).  If Moses' tall tales were anything like my grandfather's, Waterloo will definitely be a red herring!  Our branch of the family has been in England for the last eighty years or so and my grandfather's younger sister, Auntie Nesta, left the Rhondda after their mother (Mary Ann Reed, née Lewis) died in 1973.
To reiterate Millymollymandy's question, do we know whether 'our' Richard Bevan Reed is the same chap as the poor unfortunate who died in Cardiff in 1840?  Any help much appreciated!

Hello imperatam,
firstly millymollymandy, is not related to us!...the Albert Moses Reed, that she was tracing was not from south wales....unfortunately. Thomas Reed i have been chasing him for a while, almost all the older Reeds have passed away and don,t remember him , but i can remember as a lad going up pentre hill with my grandfather Christopher Thomas Reed to visit a shop ???..and a Nesta was mentioned by my Grandfather many times. does Romford , Essex ,mean anything? ......and yes
Richard Bevan Reed did die in Cardiff goal January 1840 ,he was there due to debt. and is buried in
Mary Magdalane church, Broughton /wick.along with his father and grandfather. so hello cousin !!!
but Waterloo may not be a complete red herring!!!! yet.....i have a extensive family tree available and with your help can make more progress. if interested we go e mail personal contact and i will down load it to you.

Dear Bessant and Cardiff
How exciting!  I'm sure I can fill in the blanks on Tom, Nesta and family.  Yes, they did have the shop - I think it was at 43 Llewellyn Street, Pentre, from memory but I only went there the once.  My mum and auntie (two of Tom's daughters) were evacuated there during the war and went to the local school so they remember it well.
Nesta died very recently in her late nineties in Bracknell.  She married a Canadian by the name of Fred Brown in 1939 and had one daughter, four grandsons and quite a number of great grandchildren.
How of we exchange email addresses?  Sorry, I'm a bit of a novice on the forum!
Cheers
Imperatam
