Reed family, Glamorgan
« on: Monday 15 August 11 22:48 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me please? I have found a record of a copy of a handwritten extract from the South Wales News dated 1925 concerning my great grandparents' Moses and Ann Reed (nee Morgan) diamond wedding anniversary. Amongst some of Moses' memories in the extract, he talks about his 'Grandfather killed at Waterloo.' My 2 x gt grandfather, Moses' father, was William Reed born c. 1813 in Wick, Bridgend, Glamorgan. He married Mary Jane Powell on 17 March 1838 at Sardis Chapel, Pontypridd. They had Jane in 1841 and Moses in 1845, both born in Wick.

I am now trying, without success, to find a record of William's father who was the Captain Reed referred to in the news article. It also states that Moses 'was a Scotchman by descent.' I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me. Many thanks.

I put Captain Reed + Battle of Waterloo in to google and got many hits. There was a Captain Samuel Reed who served. I haven't read all the articles but plenty of info to follow  up on.

do you have a copy of William's marriage cert to confirm name & occupation of his father?

Don't think they can have married in Pontypridd as the marriage was registered Bridgend which didn't cover Pontypridd.

William Reed march qtr 1838 Bridgend vol 26 pg 381 with Mary Powell on the same page

Now I am confused! The marriage certificate of William Reed (25) and Mary Powell (23)names Richard? Reed, Esq., as William's father, so he was Moses' grandfather, not Samuel. They were married on 17 March 1838 at the Parish Church in the parish of Langarod?, Glamorgan. Their residence at the time of marriage was Maesteg ??. Richard's rank or profession looks like 'Esq' and is written exactly as it is in his name. What does this mean? He would have been born c. 1780+. I have no idea who William's mother was. Any more ideas please?
