Newburn Baptisms Register

Hi

Does anyone have access to the above Register ?

I have a Jane Arthur born on 23 June 1808 and baptised on 8 January 1809, parents John Arthur and Mary Birkley.  This is from the familysearch site but she does not appear in the Bishop's Transcripts

I then have Margaret Arthur born on 6 November 1808 and baptised on 5 February 1809, 4th daughter of John Arthur and Mary Birkley.  This is from the BTs

It is very unlikely that John and Mary had two daughters born four months apart and baptised four weeks apart

I know that daughters 2 and 3 were Mary Ann and Isabella and I believe their first daughter was Esther, baptised on 1 June 1802.  Esther's baptism was given to me by a late relative but the BTs don't show any baptisms on that date

If I can get this sorted, I can cancel my placement in the Home for the Terminally Bewildered

the family search site has the following extracted (from original) records using a parent search:

no margaret at all?

Hi John

I'm not making my usual trip to Northumberland Archives this Wednesday but if you can wait until the folllowing week I can have a look.

The one brilliant thing about this period is that you get all the extra parental detail so it should be definitive from the actual parish records whether there's a Jane or a Margaret (or both  )

I wouldn't cancel your placement yet though - it's guaranteed you'll find more to bewilder - we'll probably all be in there waiting for you

just had a look at the BTs as well.

wonder whether Margaret was margaret jane or jane margaret and when transcribed from the original a mistake was made, the chr date jan 5 in loopy writing could easily become jan 8 and perhaps birth date was difficult to read???

looking forward to seeing the result of christines visit!!

Newburn from Herbert Maxwell Wood transcript:

Mary Ann Arthur born 19 Feb 1804 Hillhead, baptised 2 Dec 1804, 2nd daur of John Arthur, Farmer, native of this parish by his wife Mary Birkley native of Ponteland

Isabella Arthur, 3rd daughter some information

Jane Arthur born Hillhead, 4th daur.......

Robert Arthur--1st son, Elizabeth Arthur 5th daur, born Hillhead, same information as the first baptism.

I don't see any Margaret Arthur baptised Newburn up to 1812 under any parent name.

Diddy - I agree with your Newburns findings.  Thank you for putting me on the right track regarding Esther

Christine - Thank you for your offer but I think Janis's reply has saved you the trouble

Janis - Thank you for the information.  I was hoping that it would come down to Jane rather than Margaret.  I have other info on Jane (marriage, children) but absolutely nothing on Margaret.  I'm now beginning to realise why

I've come to the conclusion that if Rootschat had existed when I began many years ago, I could have done my whole family in about three weeks

Just goes to show, though, that while the BTs may be a fabulous resource they can be flawed.  Wonder where the vicar/parish clerk got Margaret from when they were completing the submission for the bishop.

About a foot stack for Northumberland and 10 inches for Co. Durham.  One fiche for Cumberland.

I have come across differences in the transcripts and the BT's.  Mostly found because I was looking for someone I knew was there from a transcript but disappeared on the BT's.  Also some of the BT's are abbreviated somewhat and the parish record containes more information.  Most noted on Lamesley records.  On the other hand I have record files that just contain the names and dates but I know the mother's maiden name was included in the parish record--noted for Penshaw (which I have a copy of the parish record film).  Best to look at all you can find.
