My grandfather John Cook, died in 1902 in School street Gateshead,as far as I know he was catholic, would anyone have any idea where or which cemetery he might be buried in? or the nearest catholic church to School street, and lastly does anyone know if School street still exists in Gateshead?
thanks in anticipation

I found Gateshead DC very helpful on such matters. It would appear that they have an electronic database that they can check. I sent an e-mail to somebody whose address appears on the web site (relating to funerals, etc) who passed it to the right person. I didn't know the cemetery in which my grandfather was buried and they were able to tell me right away.

I could give you the contact details for the person who helped me but think it would be better for the request to be passed through the appropriate channels. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll send you the details in a PM, having first checked with the person concerned that she is happy for me to pass you her details. Doing it this way should ensure no feathers are ruffled.

I fully expect you to get precisely what you are seeking however. Might take a couple of weeks, but in my case I got a map of the cemetery with the location of the grave and a chap went to check  that there was a memorial there. Great service.

I'm not in the North East any more. I found that all my relatives (1930s) were living in Rectory Terrace and there were two streets of that name in Gateshead. The lady at the council was able to tell me which one was where my rellies lived and also confirm that the houses of that era are still standing.

I'd try Multimap first, but the point of my first paragraph is just to show that you might get multiple hits for such a common street name, so further information might be needed.

School Street was in an area of Gateshead known as 'The Teams' and was demolished some years ago. It ran down from St Cuthbert's Church and, not surprisingly, there was a school at the end of it, hence the name. John Cook would have attended St Joseph's RC Church in Gateshead (which does still exist) as that was the only RC church in town at that time.
