Would like to get a copy of my fathers divorce papers. He married first wife in 1941 in Hemel Hempstead (we assume he divorced). He then went on to marry my mother in 1946 in Liverpool.
Any ideas where or how to get papers or any info.
Thanks for any help.

Hi
From The National Archives guide
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/divorce.htm?WT.lp=rg-3175
'The survival rate of divorce case files is:
•1858-1927: almost 100%
•1928-1937: 80%
•After 1937 : less than 0.2%'
in depth guide
Divorce records after 1858
'Certified copies of decrees nisi and absolute
For legal proof of a divorce in any court in England and Wales from 1858 to the present day, you will need to request a search of the Central Index of Decrees Absolute. To do so, download Form D440 from Her Majesty's Courts Service website and post it to the Principal Registry of the Family Division.'

Hi
Under Lord Denning's ruling more modern divorce case papers, post 1937 are shredded. This decision was made when Lord Denning chaired the Committe of Legal records in 1966 - case papers are I believe destroyed after about 20 years.
