Nottingham police force 1892

I've found a newspaper report from 1892 & there's someone who may be a relative who was the police officer investigating the case (on Arkwright St, Nottingham) I'm struggling to find someone of his name who was a policeman living in Notts. Can anybody tell me if they were a purely Notts force, or would they have been combined with Leics/Derbys etc ?

Hi,

I have been looking through Illiffe & Baguley's "Victorian Nottingham - Police, Courts and Prisons" and it seems Nottingham was separate from its neighbouring counties.

However, then as now they went to help other forces when needed. For example in 1885 a Parliamentary Election "brought rioting and violence" to Nottingham and anticipating the trouble police had been drafted in from Birmingham, Lancashire, Derbyshire & in 1893 some of the Notts force were sent off to Hull to help there.

Anyway could your person have been working away at the time of the census?

Thanks, Brie....it is possible. (I know there were members of the family in Derby & Birmingham, but were mainly in Nottingham). I'm working "in thin air" in the sense that I only have this policeman's surname & was wondering if he was "one of mine". I've been busy preparing for visitors, so I may have missed him on the census (the only likely one I can find in Nottm was listed as unemployed in 1891). I don't want to give any more details because, it may be, that in a fortnight, after my visitors have gone, I'll find him quite easily, so there'll be no need for anyone to help me. But, if there are any police sites etc, they might give me more details

 Arkwright Street is in the City so the Officer would be in Nottingham City Police in that year.

Thank you both very much.....his name was Sergeant Asher (don't mind you knowing....just don't want you putting in lots of work when I will have more time in a couple of weeks) . He was called to Margaret Casting's millinery & haberdashery shop on Arkwright St,on 23 Jan 1892, after her neighbour, Ann Smith  had reported to police at St John's police station (Upper Parliament St ?) had said she hadn't seen Margaret Castings or her children for over a week. He found the children, 11 year old Margaret & 8 year old Ernest, beaten to death & that their mother had cut her own throat whilst looking in the mirror.

If Ann Smith repoerted this to the St John's St police station, would this have meant they were dealing with the case or was there a station in The Meadows they would have delegated it to  ?

1898 Directory, Thomas, Sgt, 16 London Road Police Station

1905 Directory. Thomas, B Div, Det/Sgt  ,Meadows Police Station

1914 Directory  Thomas, Sgt, 152 Queens Walk, Nottingham.

1925 Directory, JW, Sgt Mansfield. (County Police )


 It looks like Thomas may be your man  but theremay be more than one with the same rank ?  I do not have any further info but I will check elsewhere and if anything turns up I will get back.
