Marriage certificate clearly states farmer.  Have been trying to imagine how a geordie would interpret an Italian saying 'farmer' and I think you may have  a point!  It certainly ties in withthe occupation of other Barellas arriving from That part of Como.

For Bryant: happy to share information on the north eastern Barella family.

Hi Joe

You can imagine a guy from down South trying to understand Jordie
never mind a Italian who is trying to speak English/Jordie.
No offence ment to anyone but I bet it was a great laugh.
Also if the Barellas had to write their own names and occupations
it would not be hard for them to confuse English words like
Farmer/Framer which have the same letters.
I have followed the stories of the Barellas since they were put
on here Rootschat and find it a fascinating story and great they
survived to an old age and lived a good life.  Well done the Barellas

Sorry for hijacking an old thread but I'm a definite descendant of the Barella's from Sunderland, Tyne & Wear (aka Durham area) and keen to have my fathers family history traced.

Does anyone know where I should begin?! Maybe someone somewhere has most of this history documented already?

Much appreciated :)

As you can see from my earlier post, I too am a descendant of the Barellas through my paternal grandmother.  If you can let me know where your connection is then I can pass on what I know.  Whilst I may not have a record of your father I will most certainly have details of your Barella grandparent.

I was doing research for a friend who is related to an Appolina Barella who came to Australia. She may have been a Mrs Cummins who arrived in Cooktown Far North Queensland in 1883 on the Duke of Buccleagh from Plymouth. She was a very elusive person who changed her name a lot. She died in Newcastle NSW in 1906 and on her death registration her parents were given as Clement and Maud. Her name was Appolina Richard(s) when she died having married a ship's captain called Richard Richard or Richards not long before her death, though at least one child was born to this couple long before that. The best estimate we can make for her birth year is around 1857. In one piece concerning her in an Australian Newspaper she said she was a native of Durham. The only Appelina or Appolina Barella who fits her dates in Durham died in 1882! I was alerted when I saw that Timoteo had 22 children by a few different mothers into thinking that maybe Clement (who married Appolina Sallancy) did the same?? Can anyone solve the mystery around this Appolina Barella please??

Hello

My sister's son in law is David Barella and I have given details of your email address to my sister to pass on and hopefully David will contact you and you can have a chat. I did all the original research but lost it all on a FTM on the computer and I don't know if I passed on the history in paper form?

Bryant (Richard)
Researching names BRYANT (Camberwell), PASTERFIELD (Essex and all), RAY (Holborn/Islington areas back to Brentford), POWELL (Glouc & beyond?)
Fletcher (Glouc into Warwickshie into Lancs?), BUCKLEY (Chatham area), Watson (Chatham area).
