Manchester Address in 1866/1887

Hi There,

 Is there any way of finding where a person lived (address) in between census’s?

My ancestor married in 1866 and then went to live in Manchester her first child was born in Manchester 1887 and the second child was also born in Manchester in 1889.
After that she left England.
Would the address be on the birth certificates? And if so is it possible to view the birth certificates on line without having to buy them…and if so how?

I suppose I’m expecting the impossible!!!

You might be lucky and find them in the historical directories:
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

They are quite comprehensive by the 1880s. Of course only the 'head' adult will be listed, and they are unlikely to be listed if they are in rented accommodation and don't stay in one place for very long. but it's worth a try.

This is what I have :- Carrie Jane (Jennie) Wright b 8 th April  1887 Manchester
                                   Thomas Wright  b 1st May 1889 Manchester

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Barbara, this looks like a very interesting site once I have fathomed out how to use it.

I do feel they would have been in rented accommodation though as they only stayed for a further two years after they were married in 1886 and then they went to live abroad.
The Wright family had their own joinery/building business as far as I know so its quite possible they may have gone to live with the in laws who I have living at:- Caroline Terrace Barton Upon Irwell on the 1881 Census.

If this family had their own business it may be worth looking them up in the rate books held at City Library, M/cr.  This will have information in between the census years.  Perhaps it may give a clue to the address that you are looking for.  The library does have a look-up service if you are not able to go yourself.

No they don't have anything on -line.

If you click on "Rate Book Guide" it will explain what they have and what information the rate books contain.   The library do have a look up service but I'm not sure what price it is.  There is contact information on this site.  Hope it may be useful.

I see from Lancashire BMDs that Carrie Jane's birth was registered in the Chorlton-on-Medlock district, and possibly also Thomas' birth in 1889 (although there is more than one Thomas Wright registered at that time). So I would be looking for an address in that area.
Found these addreses in the 1886 alphabetical directory:

John Wright, joiner, 168 Stockport Road, Chorlton on Medlock, res. 268 Upper Brook St
John Wright, joiner, 2 Kingsdown St, Chorlton on Medlock
John Wright, joiner, Coleridge St, Grecian St Lower Broughton (the in-laws?)

I've assumed that Carrie's father is John from loking at the public trees on Ancestry - don't know if that's a safe assumption or not!

I think if they moved about a lot though, your safest bet would be to send for the birth cert - all the certs I've had from that time period have had an address.
