John Laurio Platt 1782 Nottingham

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone had any information regarding John Laurio Platt?

I have that he was born in 1782 in Basford, Nottingham, England.  He joined the Navy in 1801 and in 1814 he retired and was appointed Harbour Master at Heligoland. On the 23rd December 1815 he married Rosanne Dutton and in 1821 embark ed on the ship “Providence” to Australia.

He was one of the first free settlers to Newcastle Australia, and died in 1836.

I can't seem to find much information about his parents, only that his father was a church of england clergyman .

I think this is your John

John Platts baptised 8th November 1782 at St Marys, Nottingham
Parents are John Platts and Jane

There are two St Marys this could be.  One is in the middle of Nottingham
City in what is now called the Lace Market.  There is also another one
at Bulwell which is next door to the area classed as Basford.

John senior was married at St Marys, on 9th August 1781 to a Jane Dent,
again the surname has a S on the end

I can't seem to find a record anywhere of what rank John was in the Navy, all I can find is what he was appointed to after he was retired.

Think this could be your John snr.

John Platts chris 25th August 1754 at Trowell, Nottinghamshire.
parents were John and Mary. Trowell is about 4 or 5 miles from Nottingham
city centre.

p.s. I wonder where he got his middle quite Italian name?

Some records have the middle name as "Laurie". You could have a look for the "Navy List" in libraries/archives - I can see one for 1814 on Google Books which lists the harbourmaster at Heligoland - at that point it is a James Squires.

(be careful  not to mix him up with the Captain/Commander John Platt, RN (no middle name) who was a fair bit older and died in 1832 in England).

 - this is a list of men on the St. George and Defence, from 1811 - there is a John Platt listed but he was not RN but Royal Marines.   Google Books mentions "John Platt and Ralph Teasel" (listed as Teazel on the above link) as two of the men who survived the wreck of the Defence.

I haven't come across the name Laurio anywhere else in the family as yet, it does sounds like a strange middle name to have, maybe i'll find an italian connection somewhere!

Just searched for the name John Laurio Platt and there he is in Australia
with his own website, or family of his of course lol.
Interesting story all about him and his family and even a painting
of the farm he had as one of the first free men on Australia
