Too Old for Service?
« on: Monday 08 August 11 20:40 BST (UK) »
Would it be possible for a 31 year old in the 1901 census with occupation as "private infantry" to be still in service in WW1?

It wouldnt be Impossible...lots of lads had served there time and were on Reserve list recalled in Aug 1914 do you have any evidence? many men over 45 served in WW1
Find My Past has pre 1913 records online.

Hi Ady,

I couldnt find anything on FindMyPast. The only thing I could find with a possible match is a Medal Card Index serach for "Sydney C Sutton" in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and the Labour Corps. His full name was Sydney Charles Sutton born in Mullingar. My thinking was that because I couldnt find anything on FindMyPast that maybe he carried on and served in WW1. He was my 2 x Great Grandfather's brother and only discovered about him not too long ago. No trace of him after the 1901 cenus in Dublin.

You would have to find out when 13668 was issued to the RDF
Its pre 1915 as he served at Gallipoli.
Are you on the Great War Forum ? someone maybe able to give you that info.

Edit I think that the number relates to 6 or 7th Batts RDF

A large part of the Regular Army  as at August 1914  was wiped out in the first 18 months of the war.

The Army Service Corps   with its cooks,  Storeman,  supply wagons,  grocers  and other trades  could have  been older men  who had been doing those jobs as civilians back at home.

13668 doesn't look like a pre-war number, but I would guess is a very early (possibly August 1914) war issue.

Thanks all. Would I be very much clutching at straws by saying he could have been on a reserve list or even volunteered again and was issued with a new number? Maybe I havent even got near the straw to clutch.

No Service Record survives and you dont have any medals which would have details on them?
So you cant confirm positively that it ISNT your man.

Other avenues have you checked if he emigrated,1911 census in England Canadian,Australian military records its a shame the 01 census doesnt give regiment

Good luck
