charlton in bellingham/simonburn
« on: Monday 08 August 11 14:29 BST (UK) »
Hi, i have details of my charlton family back quite a way but am trying to find proof of certain dates - trees on A* all agree on the dates but there is no proof...

William Charlton was baptised2/mar 1766 Bellingham s/o Matthew
this is certain - on Eng Baps & christenings.

however the father Matthew is down on trees as bap 17/6 /1747 simonburn s/o john   . this is on IGI as extracted record but there is also...

Matthew Charlton 20/5/1749 Bellingham s/o Thomas  igi extract

can anyone find out - who williams mother was and possibly then a marriage for matthew so i can sort out which Matthew is mine.

BT's are no help as dates in question are a bit haphazard.

The Simonburn baptism:  17 June 1747 Matthew son of John Charlton, Warkswood Head

Too many John Charlton's to speculate for a marriage.

Hi.  I chanced upon this thread. I   am searching for a Thomas Charton, bapt around 1714, possibly lived at Warkswood, NBL, [northwest of Walk]   as I  have his son, Richard, bapt  7 May 1769, son of Thomas and Mary [possibly Mary Eddy] Charlton, Place of abode: Warkswood.  I  have also located, in general terms, around this 1870 period, two other Charltons living at Warkswood:  John and Eleanor Charlton, and a James Charlton.   My tentative and unsubstantiated research suggests that Thomas, born c 1714 is the son of a Matthew Charlton, bc 1695;  this Matthew purportedly is the son of another Matthew.
It will be sincerely appreciated  if anyone can provide any additional information.
Regards  Stephen Schollum, Cambridge New Zealand

Hi Stephen, i have moved on my research since 2011 and now have my Charltons back to 1610.

I am not aware of Warkswood? there is Warksworth on the NE coast and Wark in the west of Nbld where my family are from. The ancestral home of the Charltons is just North of here nr Bellingham. We visited the area a couple of years ago.

I have John Charlton 10/11/1723 Wark, Parkend = Eleanor Dixon. married 1744 Simonburn (same area). John is my 7th GGFather and had 7 children including Matthew 1747.  Matthew seems to be a family name.

I cant connect with any of your other names/dates but the Charltons in Nbld are like Smiths in England and numerous!!

Please see here ( replies #31, 32 & 33)  for the exactly location of Warkswood, which is north-west of Wark*. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=720784.msg7629260#msg7629260

* The one on the North Tyne, not the one by the River Tweed  ;D

Ah that makes sense..a farm not village. Thank you

Definitely right area for all Charltons! Hesleyside is the ancestral home...now privately owned but you can stay there.

Thanks Diddy and JenB (again). I appreciate your assistance. Living half way around the world from NBL makes research very difficult, especially when one doesn't know the range of research tools available.  Just last night I chanced upon Bishops Transcripts for Northumberland, so found some new information. The search goes on.   I agree: too or so many Charltons and too many Matthew Charlton to select the right one.
