1883 storm in Gorleston - Henry C Smith drowned
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 07:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am wondering if someone is able to help me with a lookup on a few things please:

Charles Augustus Smith born 26 June 1882, Gorleston
Parents Adelaide Louisa Smith (nee Bridge)born 16 March 1864 in Gorleston and father Henry Charles Smith born approx 1856-62. They married July 8 1880. Not sure where Henry was born or where they married though.

Henry Charles Smith was a fisherman who drowned at sea. He was on board the boat named "Wildfire". Apparently there was a very bad storm. He died I believe March 6 1883.

I am wondering if anyone is able to verify or even offer some more information on this line for me.

Adelaide Louisa Bridge did remarry a Wharton Frederick Cutts, who was on board the same boat when Henry Smith drowned.

Any help would be so greatful

Hi Kylee

For contempary accounts of the tragedy, you would probably need to contact the Suffolk Record Office.  http://www.suffolkcc.gov.uk/sro/

As you know the exact date of their marriage it should be relatively easy to locate the marriage on the GRO indexes, but as SMITH is such a common name it might take a while ;D  If you cannot do this at your local LDS Family History Centre in Oz, then it might be worth checking the complete online index at 1837 online.
http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/

According to the 1881 census, which is online.

Henry was born in Middlesex, but again, as SMITH was such a common name and Middlesex was such a densely populated county, it might take a while to locate his birth.

Hi Allan,

Margaret (Peggy) is the cousin of my late biological father. Her mother was a twin to my grandmother. That is the connection between us two.
Our connection to you is the marriage of Adelaide Bridge to Wharton Cutts? I remember finding some information on the Cutts and sending it to Peggy, she was forwarding it on to someone who lives near her and I think she said this person was Whartons great grandson or something to that extent??

Hi Alan,

Im assuming by your previous post you said your'e in touch with a relative Margaret Mesure? If she is your relative, so am I..her and I are tracing the same tree. Do you have Wharton Frederick Cutts in your tree? If so, he is the connection to both your line and mine and Margarets line.

Here is the Cutts information I have:

William Cutts m Susan Hutchings - their son
Wharton Frederick Cutts born Aug 26 1857 London. He married Adelaide Louisa Bridge Feb 2 1886 Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Their children: William 1887, Winnifred 1890, Adelaide Florence1896, Ernest 1898 and Ethel 1905

I am still in the process of researching this line of Cutts - if this is the same line you are tracing Id love to compare notes with you!
