O'MALLEY FAMILY - Granuaile’s Castle and Lighthouse
« on: Sunday 07 August 11 14:08 BST (UK) »
Looking for help tracing any information on the following please.

John and Ann O'Malley (nee Rudy)  living at Granuaile’s Castle Lighthouse (possible dates between 1860 and 1883).  They had eight children:

Ann;
Horana; (? went to England aged 16 and married James Cosgrove)
Mary,
Margaret
Bridget, (married an O'Neill)
Sarah (married ??? a Kelly)
Ellen
Charley (wife's name Bridget - emigrated to USA about 1883)

Jonh and Ann O'Malley raised their grandaughter Catherine Cosgrove ("in a Lighthouse at Granuaile's Castle") Catherine was born circa 1869 in Newcastle Upon Tyne and afdter living with her granparents she then emigrated with her uncle Charley to the USA circa 1883.

Apologies for the sparse information.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a famous lighthouse on Clare Island, but it's on the opposite side to Granuaile’s Castle - see :

   Castle
   Lighthouse

(select the 6" historic option)

The light house is on the northern coast, and the castle and village are to the south east.

Do you have approximate dates of birth for any of the children ?
If any were born after the start of civil registration (1864) then you could try searching for a birth cert for them to confirm where the family lived at the time, and see if John's occupation related to the lighthouse in some way..

Hi Shane

Thanks for the link to the map.  Catherine, the grandaughter was born in 1869 so her parents and aunts and uncle would have all been born prior to 1864.  Honora I'm guessing was born about 1850.

Assuming your O'Malley family were RC then you may be able to locate detail for some of the younger members of the family in parish records. These go back to 1851 - see :

RC Parish - Clare Island  (Irish Times)

Hi Shirley,

do you have the family in 1871 and later? This may be yours- even though there is Jane/ Ann instead of Hanoria etc.

Looks to be a marriage 1867 James Cosgroves and Ann Maley are possible spouses.

1871: James and Jane Cosgroves with children Mary and Catharine

1881: Ann Cosgrove with 3 children and a boarder Edward Malia.

AMongst her neighbours are a Patrick and Honor Malley with children; an older John and Mary Malley and a younger John and Bridget Malley.

heywood  :)

Hi Heywood

Yes, I've got the 1871 and 1881 Census and the "consistent" name etc between the two is Mary, so they remain "possibles".   I hadnt found the 1867 marriage, so will have a look at that.  I'm working on this for a friend and trying to unravel information from my friend's late father's papers and other information from relatives in USA from 1973.  Catherine Cosgrove went to USA with her uncle Charles O'Malley (or Malley!) and I've got information on her over there and think I've traced her uncle Charley.  I think I've found Charles in 1881 census.

The "family papers" say that Catherine was brought up in Ireland by her grandmother Ann and John Malley at  Granuaile’s Castle and Lighthouse.  However, she did come back to this country before emigrating to USA with Uncle Charley.

Thanks for potentially finding a marriage - another jog saw piece to look at.

Regards

Yes, it was Mary that I thought was the link.

Malia is also a variation of the name so Edward who is a lodger with the family may also be a relative.

There are a numbers of Castles scatttered around the west Coast that were owned by Grainne (Grace) O Malley.  One of the stories told is that she slept with a rope from her ship tied to her bed so that should anyone attack same she was alerted.
