COMPLETED - George ROGERS of Parramatta

Is anyone researching "George Rogers" who lived in Parramatta in 1868 and was still alive in 1891? The George Rogers I am looking for was an Executor when John Hurst had his Will drawn up on 26 Aug 1868 -  "George Rogers of Parramatta in the Colony aforesaid Storekeeper Executor".

John Hurst aged 32, died the next year on 1 Jun 1869 and was buried in St John's Cemetery Parramatta. George Rogers was one of the witnesses at the burial.

On 7 April 1891 the will of John Hurst was reopened and then sealed and signed by both  executors, William Hurst and George Rogers - NSW Supreme Court.

I am not sure if this is relevant but John Hurst was born at Ballyreagh, Co Fermanagh Ireland about 1837 and came to Australia in 1857. John Hurst had been in partnership with William Walker in a grocery business and also was a wine and spirit merchant.

Hi there,

Are you after information about George Rogers?  I am not connected to him, however, I am aware that even in the 1870s the district of Parramatta covered a much larger area than the current City of Parramatta.   For example, the 1870 NSW Electoral Roll for St Leonards included parts of the district of Parramatta.  Hunter's Hill, Ryde, Gladesville, were part of the Police district of Parramatta.

The other electorate would be Central Cumberland, which contained most of that Parramatta Police district as well as the Liverpool Police district.

From the 1878 Electoral Roll for Central Cumberland there's a George Rogers, with freehold at Flushcomb, residing at Prospect.  I suggest this would NOW be in the area just to the north of Prospect Dam, in the City of Blacktown, so quite close to today's City of Parramatta.

From the 1890 Sands Directory, there's a George Rogers, a tailor, on the Western Road, Prospect (that would most likely now be The Great Western Highway, Prospect or as far east as say Mays Hill).

From the 1892 Sands Suburban Directory, there's a George Rogers, Western Road Prospect on the Northern side, nearest cross street Houison Street :  From Houison Street the entries read:
Hugh MILLER 
John J MATTERS
George ROGERS
George REYNOLDS

Perhaps there's RChatters who may have connections with those 1892 neighbours and be able to help confirm IF that would be your George Rogers.

Thanks for the info on the size of the Electorate of St Leonards in 1870 - I had no idea it took in such a large area. I have also seen an advertisement in SMH 20 Oct 1870 for a George Rogers opening a Drapery Establishment at 760 George St Sydney - "the general public, including his Parramatta friends, are invited to attend".  But no idea if it is who I am looking for. Do you know anything else about your George Rogers?  Perhaps his parents names, or where/when he was born/married/died? or if any children?

Some thoughts:

Have you compared his 1869 signature with his 1891 signature (on the probate packet records) to confirm he was same person?   

Who was William Hurst related to? (does the probate packet show this, the index only shows John Hurst Date of death 1 June 1869, Granted on 13 July 1869, and does not mention it was reopened and resealed in 1891)

Well, this doesn't find your George Rogers, but does at least confirm the connection between John Hurst and William Walker

William Hurst (c1842-1936) was a younger brother of John Hurst - other siblings living in NSW were George Hurst (1838-1910), Grace Thompson (nee Hurst 1841-1919) and Mary Jane McKune (nee Hurst (1851-1934).

Forgot to say that John Hurst's business was in Sydney - "John Hurst & Co - Grocers & Wine & Spirit Merchants" - at various locations in Bathurst and George Streets. For some of the time there was a partnership with William Walker. There are also death notices and probate that link "John Hurst & Co" and John Hurst who died in Parramatta. There were also connections with the HURST, GRANLEESE and PEISLEY families in Parramatta. Later there was another "John Hurst & Co" in George Street Sydney but he was a jeweller.

Just found this item about the Walker/Hurst connection and will follow up this lead

"On Thursday, the 7th instant, at the Scots Church, by special license, by the Rev. Dr. Lang, M.P., Mr. William Walker, jun., of the firm of Hurst and Co., wholesale grocers, George-street, Sydney, eldest son of William Walker, Esq., of Kiama, late of Parramatta, to Janet Bruce, eldest daughter of Mr. Alexander Tarves, builder, Clarence-street, Sydney, both natives of the colony."
