Hi Dave, yes I believe that Maria is John's child, and Sarah took the name King, but for some reason they did not or could not marry, on the 1861 on the original against Maria there are a couple of words that appear to say ",A Ward",A Ward of Court maybe? I am unsure, what are your thoughts.

Hi Dave, as you can see above John King and Sarah Boucher never married?

i do have the census for 1861 but it does not say she never married and as i said previously her daughter's birth cert says she was formerly sarah boucher.      dave

hi keyboard 86      i do believe now that maria b. was under the custody of john watkins probably so that she could remain with her mother. a servant could possibly loose their child to a workhouse in those days.  if there was a court order for this do you know where i could look for this ?     thanks dave

Possible explanations:

She was illegitimate and born as Boucher - her mother married somebody called King and she adopted that surname

Boucher was a family surname - possibly her mothers maiden name - and she used it to disguise the fact that she was a single mother
