Old Streets in Hendon and the East End of Sunderland
« on: Saturday 06 August 11 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am hunting for the site of some streets in the old town, I had a number of ancestors with the surname Caffrey living in that area.  The streets are -
Golden Alley
Flag Lane
Barker's Entry
Green? or Queen's? Place, Littlegate
If anyone else has a clue I could put an old map on top of a new map, feel sure that most of the Caffreys in that area from about 1840 to 1890 are connected and I am trying to unravel them!

Have to go offline now!!
Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat  :)
Golden Alley was at 30 High Street East, it was 9 feet wide, and ran through to Coronation Street.
Go to http://lewis.dur.ac.uk:8888/pip/iwspip.asp?img=p1666&ref1=1813 if you zoom in Golden Alley is the seventh street west of the area marked 'Intended Market'
You could also look at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/eng-dur-sunderland/2006-05/1149032856
Little Gate was on The Green to the south and west of Bishopwearmouth Church.

You can see Queen's Place to the south of the church on the same map.
It is Baker's Entry, not Barker's Entry, but does not appear to be marked, but it was next to Queens Square/Place in the 1851 Census.
This 1827 Map has key to the alleys lanes etc. a http://lewis.dur.ac.uk:8888/pip/iwspip.asp?img=p2387&ref1=2258

Good evening Stan

Thanks ever so much for the information, I have had a look at the links and they will be an enormous help as I can see from Street View how much of the old area is gone. One family, I can now see, did live in a tightly defined area for around 50 years and the other is close by on one census so far. The research continues.

Kind regards
Tania
