All the births are correct in the Free BMD UK........please don't delete them.

Joseph arrived here before Rachel, Richard and Samuel.

Kaye, the ones I found showed a birth for a Rachel HOPE in 1891 in UK and a Richard HOPE but wrong district  so obviously not your family.

Informal adoptions were very common and required no paperwork whatsoever. Adoption legislation was not introduced in NSW until 1923.

According to a website re the history of adoption: An estimated 300,000 adoption have occurred within Australia.  A similar number of  unregistered  adoptions where no official transaction took place is also  believed to have occurred.

Thank you for your reply Judith.
I will try the link you provided.  I have a feeling that I will never find out who Emily's birth parents
were.
Because both Rachel and Joseph's death certificates both state they only had the one child, Richard, it has made be believe that Emily was reared by them but she was not theirs by birth.  Richard (their son) provided the death details.

Who was the informant on Emily's death certificate?  As I said, obviously that person thought Joseph and Rachel were her parents.

Were her parents witnesses at her wedding?  If they were that would show that they were happy to be thought of as her parents.  Wondering also if there is a will for Joseph and/or Rachel which might mention Emily as their daughter - or not!

I think you're right and the truth will never be known.  Seems odd that Richard did not put her down but I suppose he was so much older than she was and would, perhaps,  have remembered that she was not the natural-born child (that is, if she wasn't!).

Did Samuel WILD stay in contact with the family?

To everyone for their help.

I have been able to establish via descendants of the Hope family that Emily was not Joseph and Rachels child by birth.

Emily was their FOSTER CHILD.  Joseph and Rachel also fostered a boy named Harry, although I have never heard mention of him.

I am now about to go on a search to try and find her birth parents.
