Looking for Bridget Maloney daughter of Stephen Maloney
« on: Saturday 06 August 11 03:58 BST (UK) »
I am having a lot of difficulty identifying the correct Bridget Maloney and her family in the UK prior to Bridget emigrating to Western Australia and becoming my great great grandmother.  Substantial details I have so far are:

Father - Stephen Maloney a gas fitter by profession (ex Bridget's marriage cert)
Emigrated to Western Australia 1858 - shipping records advise age 20 years, servant from Middlesex (DOB calculates to cira 1838)
Married George Bellchambers (Bell Chambers) 26/12/1858 with one child Stephen James Chambers from that marriage
Married Isaac Haley, date ?, with six children from that marriage
Died Northampton, Western Australia 15/05/1910.
Death certificate provided London as her birth place.
Difficult to decipher age on death certificate, looks like 67 but maybe 69.

Previously on RootsChat, for less information I was able to provide,  Louisa Maude gave the following details:

There is only 1 listed on 1841 being born 1839

1851 ref H0107/725  4 folio 18 page 28

St Boltophs Aldersgate
James Maloney Lab 50
Mary 45
Bridget 2
All born in county

This scenario  fits reasonably well but Bridget's marriage certificate which I have been able to obtain since, advises her father as Stephen Maloney a gas fitter.  The father's name of Stephen is supported in that Bridget named her fist born Stephen.  However I do note her son was given the second christian name of James as in Louisa' information above.

Is anybody able to help me identify my Bridget and her family in the UK prior to her Emigrating to Western Australia.

Regards

Hi Chris this is the same group in 1851:-

James 65 occ Porter b Limerick Ireland
Mary 58 b Tipperary Ireland
Bridget 12  Daughter b Aldgate Middx
Plus 2 visitors
Residing at 2, Sun Court, St Botolph, Aldgate, Middx
Census Ref HO107/1524/148/39

Just an observation, I just wonder if in fact James and Mary are Bridget's Grandparents, and Stephen, (Who I could not locate 1841/51) had died or also emigrated?

Thanks Keyboard86.

I wondered that too.  But what disturbs me is that Bridget's marriage certificate describes her father Stephen Maloney as a gas fitter, so you would think he had been around a while and perhaps enough to get a fix on him.  But I am darned if I can find anything that relates to him.

In any event something substantial must have happened in Bridget's life to make her take that big step to emigrate to Australia at an age of about 20 years.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and with a bit of luck somebody out there might be able to shed some more light on Bridget and her family.

Thanks again

Chris

According to the 51 census, Mary would have been 43 when she had Bridget if she is her mother, which is very late but of course not impossible.

Have you been able to find her birth  ???

Where does it say she was born, as I cant seem to pick them up on the 51 from Ancestry. :(

Has the surname been mis transcribed in 1851  as I can find the other Maloney family that keyboard86 found

Looking at the age of the supposed mother and daughter again of this family  she would have been 46 when her daughter was born assuming all ages are correct.

Another possibility is that her father may have had both names and simply swapped them around from time to time or they were entered incorrectly on the census's  :-\
