Rawtenstall; Rowan brothers in 1911
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 20:36 BST (UK) »
We know two ancestors, William and Edward Rowan originally from Ireland were living with their families in South Street, Rawtenstall in 1911. We suspect they attended a Roman Catholic church, possibly St James the Less. We are wondering where might they be buried if they settled and then died in this area?

Hi,

I would guess at Rawtenstall Cemetery on Burnley Road which opened in 1877 as I don`t think St. James had a graveyard.

Regards,
Mo

Edward Rowen and Anthony Rowen both of 14 South Street were buried at Rawtenstall Cemetery in 1912.

Edward aged 3 on the 11.1.1912
Anthony aged 10 24.2.1912

They are buried in a catholic grave along with other young Rowen/Rowan people.

Thankyou so much for that information Hassy Girl; Anthony and Edward were the children of Edward and Ellen. How sad.
May I ask where you managed to get the information from?

I shall contact the council as we plan to visit the area in the near future.

Thankyou to everyone who replied to my query. You are right Mosiefish, there is no graveyard at St James the Less.
I've been ablet to confirm Rawtenstall is the cemetery where our ancestor and family are buried.
Just to add, the Rossendale borough council who I telephoned were very helpful as well. :)

Hello Penpoll,
I phoned the Rossendale Borough Council 01706-878660 and spoke to someone who was able to confirm the names of people in a particular grave. They should be able to tell you whether the library has that information too.
Coincidentally we plan to visit the area of Rossendale and Rawtenstall cemetery today!
Good luck
