Hi Leigh,
Source of info a Family Tree on Ancestry.
You should get the 1865 Marriage Cert and it should have if he was Widowed or not.
Do you have Kates Marriage and Death Cert?
What info does it have on them if you do?
I wondered how you had her Mother as Louisa Parsons?

Trish :)

RE.  Ancestor -RICHARD ALFORD from Freshwater B abt 1773

Hi to those who recorded information on the Alford/Atkey families earlier this year and the excellent site given for Alford and Atkey families of other researchers.

We are connected on our MOREY line of family by a marriage of Edward Oliver Smith to Julia Morey at Northwood IOW.  Edward's Mum was Elizabeth Gleed ALFORD  Bp 26 Jan 1804 St Mary Cowes.
Elizabeth's parents are Richard Alford  who we understand was B c 1773  Freshwater and m Elizabeth nee Cole on 14 Oct 1798 must somehow be linked to this research you have all been kind enough to post on the r/chat site.  Is there some way of linking into this from your research to tie in how it all fits together, please?

Can anyone enlighten us as to if our Richard is in any way a relation of the two families above?

Thanks and Happy New year to all rootschatters  :)

Hi all

Need to know if anyone can trace our ancestors who appear to have vanished from the family search site (pre 1837) - these are Elizabeth Gleed Alford who married John Richard Smith on 14 Oct 1830 Northwood (Cowes) Isle of Wight.  Their 5 children are below:

George Augustus Severin Smith B 28 Aug 1832 Cowes
Amelia Sturgis Grover Smith B 21 Feb 1834 Cowes
Hugh Abbott Harlow Smith B 1 May 1836 (place unknown)
Edward Oliver Smith (our link to the family) B 22 Aug 1837 West Cowes
died on 19 Aug 1914
John Hall Smith b about 1840 Cowes

Since Smith is a minefield name to research we hope someone out there may know why these children of Elizabeth and John Richard Smiths are given such "poignant" christian names as there must be some reason for these - unless they are past family name links, we have no idea on this.

Perhaps someone on the rootschat link will know or be related, please ? ;D

Hello Ann E

How very kind of you to send the 1861 Census with the data and the marriage details for Hugh Abbott Harlow Smith.  We can only guess that this was a "well-heeled" sort of family and that our Julia Morey who was about to wed Edward the son of John/Elizabeth Smith was living there at the time in preparation for her forthcoming Wedding as the Morey parents Isaac & Jane may not have had sufficient accommodation for her to stay over with them in Cowes, where Isaac was a Baker and Pastrycook - and was a ship's biscuit maker based in Portsmouth earlier, who made the hard blck kind of biscuits they ate aboard the old men-o-war ships of the Navy!  Teeth were probably lost in the process!!!!!

We appreciate your help - but find the naming of the children odd in view of the surname Smith.
We can only assume it had some connection to the former family descendants on one side or other.

Ta very much Ann - you are a star.

Thanks Ann :) for the excellent info on Smith Alford etc. family.  Still we shall hunt them down as no link appears to the ones being researched but there must be a link for our Richard father of Elizabeth.

Know others who are searching for the name of Gleed too.  It all gets intense!

Cheers  John
