Hi im trying to trace my partners family his great grandad was born in ireland about 1856 im unsure what area it was he moved to durham dont know dates and married mary ann grey in 1888 i only know of 1 child john reid born 1887 in crook, durham i have james and mary's marriage cert and james's dad was john reid. i have tried to get as much info as i can but have seemed to come to a stand still with the reids as i dont seem to be able to search records from ireland online. if anybody has any hint or tips id be very greatfull.

Your problem is that the birth of James Reid is before the start of civil records, so you need to search to see what, if any, parish records are available. To do this you need to know what denomination your Reid family were, and where they lived - i.e. townland, town or parish.

hi thats the problem im havin as nobody knows as to where abouts they came from looks like ive come to a dead end with that side of the family.

Have you been able to trace the family through all possible English census returns ?

Sometime people gave a more detailed place of birth on the later returns

the name james reid is very common so is hard to track which is the right person 1881 is the first census i can find him on

Check the 1911 (if he was still alive) as quite often people put their exact place of birth in that particular census, rather than just "Ireland."
