Beatty of Ballingarry/Ballyphilip/Earl's Hill/Glengoole
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 19:36 BST (UK) »
I want to redo my family plot headstone in Tipperary.  I need the birth/death dates for my great-grandmother, Mary Beatty (or Beattie) who married Patrick StJohn.  They had one daughter, my grandmother, Catherine StJohn who married my grandfather, Daniel Wilson of Ballyphilip, Ballingarry in 1922/3.  I think Catherine died in 1923 or 1924 but I can find no record of her birth or death (but she is listed in both the 1901 and 1911 census as being in Earl's Hill, Ballyphilip).  I cannot find a birth certificate for Mary Beattie but I know she died on March 24,1936 - I think she may have been born in 1870.

Would love to give my ancestors a correct headstone so I appreaciate your help.  I am in the US so I can't get to the historical centers to wade through the microfilms!

two possible deaths for Mary on the BMD Index :

  Name:   Mary St John
  Registration district:   Cashel
  Event type: Death
Quarter and year:   Jan - Mar 1936
Age : 74    (est. year of birth 1862)
[volume and page references are missing...]

  Name: Mary St John
  Registration district:   Cashel
  Event type: Death
Quarter and year:   Apr - Jun 1936
Age : 62  (est. year of birth 1874)
  Volume :   3 / Page :   253

Second one fits the details you have a little closer, and places her year of birth around 1872.

....... my grandmother, Catherine StJohn who married my grandfather, Daniel Wilson of Ballyphilip, Ballingarry in 1922/3.  I think Catherine died in 1923 or 1924 but I can find no record of her birth or death (but she is listed in both the 1901 and 1911 census as being in Earl's Hill, Ballyphilip).
.....

a marriage match for Catherine and Daniel :

  Name: Catherine St John
  Registration district:   Cashel
  Event type: Marriage
Quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1923
  Volume: 3 / Page : 292

  Name: Daniel Wilson
  [same index references as Catherine]

I dont see any good matches for a death of a Catherine or Kate Wilson in the Cashel district around the dates you mentioned - could the family have moved by then ?

Thank you so much.  I did come across the marriage cert for Catherine and Daniel but no other certificates for her.  The family didn't move because she died and was buried in Glengoole cemetary.  Her mother, Mary StJohn (nee Beatty) is buried there as well and I have her death certificate from 1936 (I got that from Clonmel records).  It's Mary's birth and Catherine's birth and death that are a mystery.  Maybe the local churches will have some records, I'm hoping.

based on Catherine's age on the 1901 & 1911 census return, and allowing for the slight discrepancies in the ages on the returns - a possible match for her birth :

  Name: Catherine St John
  Registration district:   Callan
  Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Apr - Jun 1899
  Volume: 4   Page : 437

Callan is the registration district just east of the district of Cashel. It includes areas in counties Tipperary and Kilkenny.

census link for reference :

  St. John, household - 1901
  St. John, household - 1911

Thank you so much - I went through all the records I could find online and didn't come across this possible birth record for Catherine.  And no, I have nothing on the marriage of Mary and Patrick other than a census record showing them as married!
