Tying up loose ends
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 19:31 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for help please. My Great Aunt Rose Ann Baxter married Arthur Selby Dalgliesh
in Canada 1912? had a son in Canada then moved to New Zealand. I’ve traced all the family
even the living relatives however none of them know much.  They went to Canada from the
UK on their way to New Zealand I don't know why they went independently or to Canada
maybe because he was at sea

My question is when did they go to New Zealand from Canada, did she go by herself with
her son or did she travel with her husband. Her husband was a captain and so they
could have gone to New Zealand independently.
Thanks in advance for your help Rosalie

Hello there.

This appears to be the marriage ...

https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/MN55-4G1/p1

You can search for them in the 1911 census for free at this link ...

I don't believe there were any records kept for passengers outbound from Canada. Have you checked for New Zealand inbound passenger lists?

Hi again.

You might check at your local library to see if they subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition. I believe this would give you access to most world records.

They must have arrived in New Zealand by 1919, as they both appear on the Electoral Rolls for that year.

For some reason, although they lived on the same street (and assumably in the same house) they have different towns listed (obviously a mistake, but I don't know which is the correct one!)

Dunedin South Roll (Otego)

Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Nile street, St. Clair, mariner
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Nile street, St. Kilda, married

After looking at the 1928, I think the St. Kilda is the correct one:

1928 Dunedin South
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Nile street, S.K. SS Tahiti, master mariner
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Nile street, St. Kilda, married

There are several more Rolls showing address changes/occupation changes for them up to and including Arthur's retirement, if you are interested.

I'll leave it up to you to figure out which is father and which is son, expecially in 1949, where it appears that Rosie is living in two places at once?

I also found an earlier one, so the ship from Canada now has a smaller window of time.

1914 Wellington (Wellington East Supplemental Roll)
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Salek Street, ship's officer
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Salek Street, married

1919 Dunedin South (Otego)
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Nile street, St. Clair, mariner
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Nile street, St. Kilda, married

1928 Dunedin South (Otago)
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Nile street, S.K. SS Tahiti, master mariner
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Nile street, St. Kilda, married

1938
Remuera (Auckland)
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, 5 St. Stephens Avenue, C4, marine engineer
Dalgliesh, Mary Isabel, 5 St. Stephens Avenue, C4, married

1938 Auckland, Auckland East
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, 22 St. George's Bay Road, C4, master mariner
Dalgliesh, Rosie, 22 St. George's Bay Road, C4, married

1946 Otahuhu (Auckland)
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Ridge Rd., Howick, compass adjuster
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Ridge Rd., Howick, married

1949 Otahuhu (Auckland)
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Ridge Rd., Howick, compass adjuster
Dalgliesh, Rosie, Ridge Rd., Howick, married

1949 Otago - St. Kilda
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, 181 Victoria Road, marine surveyor
Dalgliesh, Rose Ann, 181 Victoria Road, married

1954 Otago - St. Kilda
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, 11 Wilson Avenue, marine surveyor
Dalgliesh, Rose Ann, 11 Wilson Avenue, married

1957 Otago - St. Kilda Main Roll
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, 11 Wilson Avenue, marine surveyor
Dalgliesh, Rose Ann, 11 Wilson Avenue, married

1963 Otago - St. Kilda
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, 11 Wilson Avenue, retired
Dalgliesh, Rose Ann, 11 Wilson Avenue, married

1917 WW1 Reserve Rolls, 2nd Division (I included all the Dalgliesh, in case of relations)
Dalgliesh, Albert, Labourer, 18 Oriental St., Petone
Dalgliesh, Fredrick William Robert, Miner, Buller Rd., Reefton
Dalgliesh, Henry Allan, Shepherd, Ohau
Dalgliesh, Richard William, Clerk, 11 Gladstone Rd, Napier
Dalgliesh, Arthur Selby, Master Mariner, 31 Norfolk St., St. Clair, Dunedin
Dalgliesh, Charles Stewart, Fields Inspector, Department of Agriculture, Hokitika
Dalgliesh, John Hoble, Woollen-worker, 25 Church St West, Timaru

Hope it all helps!

~Barb~

Hi barb

This is great Sorting out which is the son should not be a problem as he died 29th december 1949 - Dunedin. New Zealand.

When I've finished sorting out the tree I'll be passing it on to their living relatives.

Thanks for your help it takes me a step nearer to finishing this leg of my family tree
