Independent Methodist, married at home
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 01:14 BST (UK) »
Having read majm's very informative piece on marriage certificates missing information, I hope someone can help me with this brick wall. My ggrandmother Elizabeth Bradley was married in 1868 at home in Rose Street Shepherd's Paddock by her uncle Nathaniel Pidgeon, "according to the rites of the Independent Church ". Nathaniel broke away from the Methodist Church and formed the Independent Methodists and in 1860 was licenced to perform marriages. The certified copy I have gives only the basic details (names, occupation, place of residence and conjugal status.)  She married William Collins about whom I know nothing before the marriage. Would any chatterer know where such original records might be preserved,, please?

Hi
If Shepherds Paddock is in South Australia there probably wont be any other information in the original records.  If that is the case try the SA marriage records on cd  as they have tried to provide further info there.  Otherwise i'm afraid I haven't any suggestions Best of luck !

The Rev Nathaniel preached in Sydney so I feel that the Shepherd's Paddock is in the area which we now call Darlington or Chippendale.

The City of Sydney Archive website has some information about "Shepherd's nursery which is remembered today by many street names including Pine, Myrtle, Rose, Vine, Ivy and Shepherd Streets".

While this info does not help in your search for the original records I hope that it adds to the overall picture of the 1868

Maybe it would be worth contacting the Uniting Church Archive, they might hold his records, as Rev Pidgeon started the City Sydney Mission

Sorry, Rilla, I should have mentioned that I was writing of Shepherd's Paddock in Sydney.
I will contact the Uniting Church archive as you suggest, Cass. Thanks for your help.

IF you are chasing information about Williams Collins,  did he and Elizabeth bradley have any children together,  if so  one of their birth certificates should say at least where William was born  and how old he was at the time of  birth.

Do you know if he was alive when she died?

Thanks tropicalj; they had 4 children, so I'll go for one of their BC's. He has no death entry in BMD, although I've seen his gravestone, and there is a funeral notice for him in the SMH in 1854, so we know he died :) His wife died in 1856 and the death notice refers to her as relict.
Wonder why I didn't think of a child's BC. ;D
Although maybe as they were all born before 1852 there may not be much detail?

Yes hopefully  it might contain some clues,  you can use a transcription  agent in NSW.

however I am a little confused here as you say  they were married in 1868  but you  than say  they died in 1854 and 1856????

Oh gosh! I've confused mother and daughter! What a dope!Sooo sorry. I did mean 1868, so I can easily get a child's BC. His death certificate (1922) just says born in Sydney, no other details known, as the informant was one of his daughters, that's not surprising in those days. His wife died before him.
Maybe I'm too old for genealogy! I do apologise to those helpful folk I've confused.
