1851 lookup for BAXTER in Guisbro
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 00:58 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for a James BAXTER b. circa 1830.  He married my 3xGreat-Grandma, Margaret (MILBURN or EMERSON) in August of 1851.  Then, his residence was "Guisbro" (as spelled on the certificate), and he was a sawyer, same occupation as his father, Thomas.

The 1851 census must have been taken before their marriage.  I think I found my Margaret, age 17, with a Wm. BOYES family in Guisbrough, sub-registration district Lofthouse.  (Got this from another source; unsure whether she was a servant or relative there.)

Can anyone locate 20/21-year-old James in 1851?  There's a Thomas BAXTER, sawyer, in Walsoken, Cambridgeshire (born in Walsoken, Norfolk), but no James among the family.  And the same family in 1841 doesn't have a James among their children, when he should be there at age 10/11 with the other kids.  (Unless the one who was transcribed as 11-year-old Thomas is actually "James"?)

Thank you for checking!

Hi I think the Walsoken family are his, as in 1851:-

Jas BAKTER 20 occ Sawyer b Walsoken Norfolk
Residing at Westgate, Guisborough, Yorks

He is a lodger also with William and Mary Boyes at what looks like the Mermaid Inn
Census Ref HO107/2375/326/18

Margaret is a House Servant b Guisborough
James was baptised/christened 30th May 1830 Walsoken, Norfolk Father Thomas Mother Sarah

That certainly was fast!  Thanks so much, Keyboard86!

*sigh* Another lesson learned in getting printouts of all pertinent census records, rather than relying on transcriptions!  I never gave a second glance to the guy named "Jas. Bakted" in the same place :-p

Anyone have an idea what type of establishment the Mermaid Inn was, circa 1851?

And why James, at age 10, wasn't with parents Thomas & Sarah in 1841?  (Unless it's a case of more poor transcribing!)

I appreciate the baptism note, BTW.

Hi again, I cannot help thinking James is Thomas in 1841, also noted that he is shown as Not born in County, as are all bar Thomas snr, Sarah in 1851 is b Broughton Huntingdonshire and the children are now all born in county.

PS I would suggest The Mermaid Inn was a Public House, which predominently sold Beer to thirsty travellers, and had rooms for them to board the night.
