William Ford
« on: Tuesday 02 August 11 19:15 BST (UK) »
Looking for info on my ancestor William Ford born Oct. 1, 1788 in Chipping Wycombe, Bucks.  His first wife was Jane? and had two kids, James A. and Phidelia or Philadelphi.  He wed Susan Garrett in1809 in Cherham and later moved to Hastings in Sussex Co.  Emmigrated with children to New York, USA around 1835.  He may have moved back to Buckinghamshire late in life and died 1859.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Shawn.

1851 Census(England)  Chesham, Bucks.

There is a William Ford(c1787.Chipping Wycombe) with wife Sarah(1788. Chesham, Bucks) with children Ann c1819, James c1823 & Samuel c1825.  All children born Chesham.

His occupation is master carpenter.

Seems to be the same family in 1841 census.    Son Samuel c1825, appears to be living in Chipping Wycombe in 1841.

I'm reasonably sure there is no place called Cherham**,  in Buckinghamshire.  (**Mistranscribed in census on Ancestry).

Where have you got your information from.?

Thank you so much.  I have family papers back to James that said he came from Hastings, England.  The Mormon website Familysearch.com has him in the 1850 census of Churchville, NY.  William and James homesteaded in Berlin, Wisconsin in the mid 1850's.  He served in the US civil war for Wisconsin.  On Rootsweb.com Worldconnect, my distant cousin had the info on where William was born and Sarah.  Do you have an idea of where I may look to find William's parents?  Thanks again.

Oh my.  I seemed to have missed the heading 1851 census in bold type in your last post.  Now I wonder if it is the same family.  Unless William and his family moved back to England in 1851 for a short time, because I have him on a census in 1850 in the states.  An article from a book on the civil war states that James was trained as an Engineer as a young man in England, and another census puts him as entering the US in 1835.  Well, more loose ends to track down.

Hi Shawn.

Samuel Ford c1825. Chesham, Bucks.   Seems to have married Leah ? ? ? c1831.  of Brighton, Sussex.  According to various English census returns.

There appears to a marriage in 1856 O/N/D - Chelsea, London.   Bride listed as Leah Simms.

==============================================================================

I may suggest you contact BucksFHS to do a name search for William Ford.  The cost is a  £2, I think.  http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk/

Also, how do you know he came from Buckinghamshire.?

===============================================================================

There is a passenger/imimigration list on Ancestry, giving a William Ford  departing SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND and arriving in New York - 19th July 1836.  Aged 48 and aboard the Brig 'Socrates'.

Microfilm Serial Number:   M237
Microfilm Roll Number:   30
List Number:   604

No image available to me to look at.

I have no idea if he is your William Ford though.

JUst re-reading the first post again

You have him born 1788, but by 1809 (age 21) he has married, had two children, been widowed and married again.
Possible, I know , but makes me wonder if either dates are out or if two different people.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

In the 1860  United States Federal census, he appears to be with the same family of Smiths in Berlin, Green Lake, Wisconsin.

In the 1850 United States Federal Census, there is a James Ford b.1813. England with him, in Churchville, Monroe, New York.

He may be father-in-law to Henry Smith c.1810. England.

In the 1841 ENGLAND census.

James Ford-30.  Occ.Blacksmith.  (Possibly your Engineer.??)
Jane Ford   -25
John Ford-2
James Ford-3 M

All born County Durham.

Living in Monkswearmouth, in the district of SUNDERLAND.  England.  (SUNDERLAND was the port of departure for William Ford, that I found for you).

I'm not saying this is your Ford family, but it's worth investigating further.
