Grandad's war records
« on: Tuesday 02 August 11 09:47 BST (UK) »
I was looking up my mother-in-law's grandfather's war records on a family tree website, and we found a fascinating exchange of letters between his father and various army gentlemen, relating to his age. His father's objection was that he was only 17, although he had attested to being 19. This letter is very very faint. I don't have any experience of studying old documents, so all I have done is run it through Picassa a few times to increase the shadow, which has enabled me to pick out the odd word. I'll attach both pre-and post-picassa versions.
If it is a hopeless task I completely understand! The family name is Perrot, and the address at the top is 2, Arden Road, Smethwick.

I think I can make out a few words: perhaps it will prompt other people to make out more:

If you open this file with 'Paint' and zoom in, you can make out a bit more.  I can see various words but nothing in any particular order.

16 1 99, Perrott, Arden Rd, certificate, on file 17 on 1 11 14

(signed by) Mr & Mrs Perrott

Not sure if any of this helps

You've called the attached file grandad_1, so you need to give the new file a different name.  Just change the picasa file name to grandad_2 (or whatever you like).

I can make out the wording below - which doesn't seem to add much to the information on the other pages of his record. It seems to be an internal memo setting out the situation - which evidently resulted in his remaining in the OBLI (presumably the 7th Batt) until he was demobbed in 1919.

Sounds as if the issue may have been his serving in a theatre of war.  The minimum age for going to France etc in WWI was 19.   Below that age, men could still enlist, but would normally have been limited to home duties.  (sorry, I haven't been able to look at the other papers)
