The Vitorian Government Gazette 4th september 1865 shows that Thomas John Trowell, warehouseman of Melbourne was in a list of shareholders of the INDEPENDENT PROSPECTING GOLD MINING COMPANY (REGISTERED).

Thomas John Trowell had 350 shares at 1 pound each and the mining operation was for Dry Creek Jericho Victoria.

I think that the Trowells arriving on the Lady Bird into Geelong on 19th July 1853 are the correct family and it looks like 4 persons, probably siblings.

They were   An, Charles, Thomas & William.

The 1870 Melbourne Directory shows a Thomas Trowell residing at Rowena Pde Richmond.

A newspaper article for Friday 26th September 1862 page 5, has a Charles Trowell 21, missing from his home in Rowena Terrance Richmond.

Baptism for Thomas John Trowell

Born 21st October 1839.

Baptism No 2198 January 15th 1840, St George Camberwell Parish, Surrey.

Father, Thomas, labourer.  Mother Ann.

Could this be the 1851 Census for Charles 9, William 8, Ann 6 and their mother Ann 31, (widow).  No thomas though!

Looks like the address was 4 Park Place Hatcham, Kent.

If they were having children in 1867 suspect that's NOT the 1851 census unless Ann was having illegitamate children?

A friend looked up the 1851 census for Thomas Trowell, and found one, age 11, visitor, at residence of Benjamin Boulton, butcher, Lambeth.

Interesting about Charles' going missing - I wonder what happened to him?

Thanks Alison - your guess is as good as mine for the occupation.

Thanks very much to

Gerry (especially the fact that he was an accountant and that he lived in Adelaide)

Essie (especially the ship the family arrived in and the year) and I will try to follow the children of the first marriage just in case that is the connection I'm looking for.

Cando (Mother's maiden name being Heath confirmed that the Norman Heath Trowell who enlisted in WWI was Thomas and Emma B 's son. Interesting, in his enlistment application he stated that both parents were dead, although I haven't found Emma's death at all.  Also the year and place of birth of Thomas gave me details for the 1841 and 1851 census.)

So, with all your help, I have found quite a lot about Thomas J Trowell,  and soon will find the connection with Forbes.    It appears he moved around a fair bit so there is a lot of possibilities.

Thanks once again

Jean

Hi Jean (and other Trowell tracers),

This is my first first entry on this site . I am Norman Heath Trowell's gran-daughter and can give information which may fill in some missing links for you - I am also interested in gaining some information. Until now, it has been a dead-end in tracing my grandfather's past. Will wait and see if I have done this correctly and this is received.
