Manchester Cathedral marriage 1838 - Completed thanks

Hi
Is there anyone able to look up the marriage of Henry Hulme and Sarah Burgess on 1st July 1838 at Manchester Cathedral?
I'm hoping her father is Samuel and she is the sister of an Ann Burgess who is one of my brick walls! I'm not sure of her age, as she was christened the same day as Ann (at Macclesfield ), but have a feeling she was older when christened. Sarah and Henry Hulme were witnesses at Ann's marriage in 1852.

The marriage is on the IGI (from a film), but no parent's names given I can see. Not on pilot or freereg.

Any other details would be great

Right father (maybe - a popular name around then!).
A pity they didn't actually say what age she was! - but still miht be able to find them in Census now.

Just out of interest - where did you go to do this - the record office? - whereabouts is that?

Whilst Manchester Central Library is closed until 2013 for refurbishment, the original library on Deansgate is being used.  City Library at Elliot House, 2nd floor.

The website tells you all they hold, they are open 6 days a week, but you need to make an appointment for a microfilm/fiche machine as they can get busy.

For records of Churches, see the Church registers.
Lots of things have gone to the Records Office, such as original books etc., and some need to be ordered at the Records Office as lots of items from the library have gone into storage.

Hi Goldie -

It's quite some time since you posted your request for information on Samuel Burgess as you'd come up against a brick wall with the Burgesses in the early 19th century.  This may well be because the majority of Burgesses in Salford during this period were originally Jewish, although most had their children christened in the Cathedral and married there.  Although in public they adopted Christianity they often retained the Jewish custom of marrying cousins.  Hope this may be of some interest to you.

Thanks for the interest in Burgess family.
I actually think they were Prestbury/Macclesfield people - i have found them in later Census there, and I think this Sarah Burgess is the sister of an Anne christened at the same time as Sarah from Macclesfield - Sarah and Henry Hulme sign as witnesses to Anne's marriage.
As you know, Burgess was a pretty common name so its tricky to sort them all out!
