1801 Matthew

Just thought I'd mention that he could be named after Janet's grandfather Matthew Smellie.

I think I may have replied to the wrong post Dave but you probably know who I am referring to.  Janet Rochead also had a brother called Matthew.

Thanks alys, you're probably correct.  As you say, Janet's brother was Mathew - I'd forgotten that.  Too keen to find meaning from the name elsewhere.  ::)

I'm intrigued by your reference to "Janet's grandfather Mathew Smellie."  Was that simply supposition on your part, or have I missed something.  So far, I don't think I've traced Janet's mother's parents.  If it's a guess on your part, it's a good one that I've never considered before.  In my defence, Smellie is a line I have never followed through fully yet.

.....and yes, albeit the 'wrong' thread, I knew exactly what you were talking about.  :)

For other's benefit, I have another, more specific, Forrest thread on the go here....

Not a guess about Mary's parents.  I'll send you a pm with a report.  A lot of the info comes from sasines and records for Quakers in the archives in Edinburgh.  I've added a lot of info to my notes today to help you see just where I got the information.  I have lots more!  There are quite a few Dunbartonshire sasines for Andrew Rouchet (other spellings possible!) and Mary Smellie (ditto spelling!) One in particular mentions children who are not in the OPRs.  I have images of some of the Smellie sasines, also images from the Records of the Society of Friends if you are interested.  If you can add anything at any time, or spot an error, please get in touch.
