CheshireBMD shows births which match all the children in the 1891 census entry, which probably means that the couple were pretty truthful about their own details too.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

... Then I realised that St. Martins and Wem are 15 miles apart, so Mary Ellen may not be that reliable.

Wem had its own registration district, while St. Martins came under Oswestry.

No Mary Ellen Stokes under either of them in the right timeframe, but there is a Mary Elizabeth Stokes in Oswestry Q3 of 1847.

The girl born in St Martins in 1847 appears with her parents William and Elizabeth in 1851 and 1861. William is an Ag Lab in 1861.

There are two plain Mary Stokes registered in Oswestry to match the age we need for 1881 & 1891. One of these is with parents Job and Mary in 1851 & 1861. Job is a labourer in a coal mine in 1861.
