I also was very interested in your posting about John and Mercy Sayer. I run a web site on the history of Margate (
www.margatelocalhistory.co.uk) and there you will find a number of maps and pictures of the bathing rooms at Margate (together with trade cards of the Sayer’s and other proprietors of bathing machines) that may be of interest. I thought you might also be interested in an advertisement in the Kentish Gazette for July 12 1811 for the sale of property following the death of Mrs Mercy Sayer:
To be sold under will of Mrs Mercy Sayer, deceased
-Freehold estate
1. House, now in occupation of Mrs Susanna Sayer, situate in a court or passage, on the East side of the High-street, adjoining to the dwelling house of Messrs Rowe.
2. Large stable yard, with stabling for 9 horses and lofts over the same, a shed capable of standing 6 bathing machines under cover, and a Garden enclosed, now in occupation of Mrs Susanna Sayer, situate on south side of New-street, adjoining to Kerby’s Livery Stables.
I was interested to read that your cousin has a ‘pencil scrawled drawing’ of the Sayer baths. I am always interested in including new information on the web site, and I wondered if it might be possible to include this sketch. I could be contacted by e-mail – my contact details are given on the web site.
