« on: Saturday 30 July 11 15:53 BST (UK) »
Is George Machell, Clothier, the father of my George Machell born 1817-1830?
(A clothier can be a maker or seller of cloth or clothing, so is it possible that clothier is a fancier name for weaver?  George Machell, Clothier, was illiterate.)
(Also, would a weaver be called a labourer on his son’s marriage certificate?)

Machell is a massive family in Dewsbury with regards to Mungo and Shoddy, One of their mills still stands today. I dont know if you have a connection to the same Machells but might be worth a check. It was William Machell who started the business in 1856 with his brother and went on to become mayor and alderman of dewsbury
