I'm confused now, In the 81 census John is married to Margaret ,but in 71 is married to Eleanor but there is a Spencer B and a Mary B and both same age gap on both census records,would this mean he was married twice.
                         In 81 John was clerk in ironworks but in 71 he's a station master also in 81 he's down as born Branthwaite but in 71 as Born Dean but his mother in law as Mary Branthwaite (HELP)

Yes, it does look like John was married twice.

John WARWICK and Margaret GRAHAM may have married in 1879 Cockemouth RD September quarter 10b 675.  Perhaps it's time to try for the certificate?

It's possible that the mother in law (from the earlier marriage) was named BRANTHWAITE.  Quite often you find surnames named after places.

If you look on the Cumberland registration districts page, you will see that Dean and Brackenthwaite both come under the registration district of Cockermouth.  Perhaps the didn't pronounce the "ck" in the Brackenthwaite locally - I don't know

Again, why the change in occupation   It doesn't seem very logical to us for a station master to become a clerk in an iron works - maybe health reasons meant a change of job.  Something you might be able to find out. Try and find out what railway companies were in the area at the time and whether they have records.  There is a lot of interest in anything and everything to do with railways so I suspect that you should be able to find mention of him somewhere especially if he was a station master.

I don't think it's anything that a certificate or two won't sort out now that you have some background information.

Hi,

I think I have solved your mystery.  I have the Branthwaite Surname Researchers Site and have found the following information in my records for you.

The Mary Branthwaite in the census as mother-in-law is Mary Bell born 1802 in Workington.  Mary Bell married Joshua Branthwaite 1842 St. Michael, Workington and the Eleanor who married John Warwick is their daughter born 12 April 1835.

Joshua is still alive and on the 1861 Census so must have died between 61 and 71 and Mary must have gone to live with her then son-in-law John Warwick and her daughter Eleanor after Joshua died.

Here they are on the 1851 with family

Joshua Head 51 Butcher and Farmer of 10 acres born Lamplugh, Cumberland
Mary wife 49 born Workington, Cumberland
Joshua son 17 butcher born Workington
Elleanor daughter 16 at home born Workington
Jonathon son scholar at home born Workington
Ester daughter scholar at home born Workington
John 5 son scholar at home born Workington

I have this family traced down to present day and a contact if there is an interest plus the rest of the Branthwaite clan of course!
