Morton of Croydon
« on: Friday 29 July 11 11:54 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
Hoping someone can help me out here, I have been working on this chap for some time and after putting many many hours in I realise I still know nothing new! It has got to the point where I am making wild ambiguous guesses so I though I should probably take a step back and see if someone with fresh eyes can see a solution, Ancestors in the greater London area cause me much grief!
Charles Morton (do not even have a confirmed birth date) married Sarah Snelson Nov 1800 in St George Bloomsbury.
Wedding cert states that he comes from Croydon, Surrey, she was a resident of the parish.
They had 3 children
James Cattel Morton b.1801
Joseph Snelson Morton b.1803
and Catherine Eliza Morton b.1804- All baptised at St John the baptist, Croydon . (Edit - I should note that in the family bible it states that James came from Godalming, Surrey but the baptism record states that he was baptised in Croydon)

Now I have sucessfully found all relevant info on the two sons (thanks to their unusual middle names) but Charles and Sarah, my 4x ggrandparents are still enigmas to me, can anyone help me find out a little bit more? I have been unable to locate them in the 1841 census - but also unable to find deaths for them (or even a birth!)
Sorry, I know it is not much to go on.
many thanks, Liz

Hi,

I know there are more than one Charles Morton's but who knows this may be him (especially as I see one sons was involved in stable keeping)

London Gazette Archives   www.london-gazette.co.uk
in 1807 a charles Morton of Croyden is bankrupt(sorry!) he is a horse dealer - this case goes on for a number of years. In 1818 (I'm assuming it is the same man) address Derby Arms Stable keeper & victualler. I haven't looked any further I'll let you if you think there is a link!!

Actually, it is incredible how having those two extra words 'derby arms' in a google seach can make such a difference, I have yet to find his birth  but it turns out the Derby arms was the meeting place for the local hunt and Charles is mentioned in a few peices of literature about the subject, and sadly it would appear that he lost his mind and killed himself. I have yet to confirm if he is 'my' Charles but 'unsound minds' run in the family and at least one Morton has ended up in an asylum. There is a lot of info in a newspaper article, so lots to follow up on.

so thank you , Junev.

After some extensive research with the help of some lovely roots chatters, I can confirm that Charles Morton - land lord of the Derby arms, is not the chap I am looking for  :(
So its back to the drawing board with Charles...

Hallo,
I myself was looking after this Charles Morton as well.
I did find not only a death of a Charles Morton in the district Lewisham in 1844 (and if I read the discussion here well this can't be the Charles, baptized 22 September 1808 in Croydon) but also  death of a Charles Morton in the district Lewisham in 1850 (APR/JUN 1850)
I think this must be the husband of Caroline Neucent, victualler in Lee.
At least this fits with Caroline being a widow in 1851.

Hi Cyp. Are you researching the same Charles that I have been? The one married to Sarah Snelson? I have hit a dead end in regards to what happened to Charles but I do have quite a bit of info regarding his family if you are interested. Liz

Hi Liz,
I don't know. What I do know is that a Charles Morton, born 22 sep 1808 in Croydon, died apr/jun 1850 (probably) _or your Charles who died in I abt 1844, but you mentioned that he was rather old_
married to Caroline Neucent (8th July 1831, St Martin in the Fields). They had 2 children, as far as I know: Rose (16th April 1834 - jan/mar 1865) and Albert Morton (20th September 1836 - Apr/Jun 1866).
Rose married 23th February 1854 John Pound (11th February 1827 - Apr/Jun 1896).
If these persons fit in your genealogy, than we can help each other.
I hear from you.
Greetings,
Cyp
