rogan family whitehaven
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I wondered if anyone could help? I am tracing the Rogan family who have lived in the whitehaven area for a number of years. I am particularly interested in the Irish connection which I havent got to yet! I have got as far as Charles Rogan 1913-1991 married to Ruth Benson. I think that his mother was a Kennedy and would therefore show up on the 1901 census but I am drawing a big blank. Could this mean that she came over from ireland after 1901? There appears to be a lot of rogans around this time. Could this be an influx of Irish? Again would catholic baptism records be kept with the church or in an archive somewhere else. Also Charles was a coal hewer. Is there anywhere that retains pit lists of employees from the 1930s and earlier? I hope this makes sense and that somebody may be able to point me in the right direction as i am going round in circles!!

Hi and welcome to rootschat
I am assuming that you have got the Kennedy bit from looking for a birth in 1913.   If you then look for a Rogan/Kennedy marriage you will find one in Whitehaven in 1906.  However, I would be happier if you had a copy of Charle's marriage certificate to show his father's name and confirm his age.  You could then check the census records knowing that you were looking for the right couple.  Do you know the names of any of his brothers and sisters?   That might help pin down the family too.    My own Irish ancestors came over in the mid 1800s so you might find yours have been established in Whitehaven for longer than you think.
Regards
Andrea

My uncle was a Rogan. He lived and worked in Barrow in Furness at the Vickers shipyards but I believe his family came from Whitehaven and before that, Ireland. He died about 20 years ago, in his seventies. He was in the army during the war. There are still family members with that surname. I don't know if that information helps.

Hi Yogi

Your post just caught my eye -I have a family member that married a "Rogan".  They lived in Workington, Cumberland again with associations of working at an Iron foundry or ship yard.

I think sometimes this family has been transcribed as "Regan".  If it's any help the Workington Rogan's although from Ireland seem to have lived in Middlesborough for awhile!

Hi Yogibear82,
I am married to  the grandson of Charles Rogan. What relation are you to the Rogan family of Whitehaven? Please get in touch maybe we can help piece some things together for you.
