George STANNERS
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 19:32 BST (UK) »
I'm researching my gggg (give or take a g!) grandfather George STANNERS. He was born in the early 1790s(1894 or 95 from his death certificate) in Rennington. He married Elizabeth PURDY in about 1820. He died in Silver Street, Berwick in 1883.

I cannot find a record of his birth/baptism, nor of the date of his marriage. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi Ian

I couldn't spot him in the Bishop's Transcripts for Rennington any time in the 1790s.

Have you tried Alnwick?  I made a start on the BTs for there but the site is moving so slowly right now that I gave up!

In the 1881 census George's birthplace is given as Alnwick. In 1871 when he is at Fowberry it is stated as Radcliffe. In 1851 when they are at Chatton it is stated as Longhoughton wnich is not far from Alnwick. Radcliffe might be Ratcleugh though, which is between Alnwick and Longhoughton.

Yes, I spotted the Alnwick reference in 1881 which is why I thought it should be the next place to search.

I didn't look at other census records but think you're right about Ratcluegh - the only Radcliffe I know of is just south of Amble - a bit out of area for current purposes.

If he can't be found in Alnwick then Long Houghton next!
