Downing
« on: Wednesday 27 July 11 02:09 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
A cousin of my husband and I have been trying to trace their family.
Bridget Downing born 1889 St Olave Bermondsey
We have info that she and some of her siblings may have been  in & out St Joseph's & St Ann's Orpington, but we don't have the admissions to confirm it was them without parents names. A Bridget Downing was there in the 1901 census and other times, but we don't know if this was our Bridget. Parents Eugene & Julia Downing (nee Crawley)
If anyone has some ideas how we could get this information that would be greatly appreciated.

The usual way is to obtain the birth certificate - which will mention father & mother, address, occupations, etc.

However, I can't find a birth for Bridget on FreeBMD?!  ???

Where did you find the information that she was born in 1889?

EDIT:
Maybe this is her birth?

March qtr 1890
St Olave district    Vol 1d, page 261

Downing, Bridget

It would be worthwhile getting hold of the birth certificate!

Thank you for your reply
That is her - born 1889 , registered 1890.
We know her parents , but a Bridget & Julia Downing were listed in the 1901 census in St Joseph's & St Ann's orphanage & we wanted to confirm we had the right Bridget, because she wasn't at the same place as her parents in 1901.

Thanks again

The orphanage records might be at the relevant archives (not sure if Orpington would be Kent or Greater London).

If your Bridget's parents were alive 1901 its odd that she's in an orphanage.

Yes both parents were both still alive in 1901, on census there was only Eugene , Julia snr & James 11mths. We think there was a least 4 children before James. Our cousin has had a reply from Cabrini children society & Bridget & Julia jun. were in the orphanage 3  different times ( if this was our Bridget) . As you can see it's very confusing. I will try the London Metropolitan Archives.

Thanks for your replies
