Regiment Movements - 3rd Dragoon Guards
« on: Monday 25 July 11 09:28 BST (UK) »
Hi, Could anyone please tell me the best way/ place to research the movements of the 3rd Dragoon Guards? I'm particularly looking at between the dates 1800 - 1850. I understand that there is a museum (in Edinburgh I think), which is impossible for me to get to.

Or does anyone happen to have this information to hand! that they'd be happy to pass on!  ;D

Many thanks

Alex

Cati - Thank you I'll take a look!

neil1821 - Thanks very much!
A question though is there any mention of being stationed at Piershill Barracks in or around 1829 and 1839. I have some records that I believe to be my ancestors of a birth (Henry Byway son of William) in scotland) and the death of a Charles William Byway in 1839 of William Byway of Piershill??
Thanks again

Alex

Not that I am an expert on this stuff but it is critical to get the name correct for the regiment, and it makes matters worse that the name changes fairly frequently and they often get amalgamated with other regiments.

Anyway:

In 1831 the 3rd (Prince of Wales) Regiment of Dragoon Guards was deployed in Bristol and famously were involved with the Bristol Riots of that year. Their Colonel was court-martialed and committed suicide, and a Captain Worthington was cashiered.

I also noted that in a history of the regiment (on the web, but source is forgotten by me) that in 1832 they were stationed at Brighton, Chichester, and Worthing. In August, 4 troops moved to Regent's Park Barracks in London to perform the duties of the Life Guards while they were being reviewed by the King. The 4 troops then returned to Brighton and Chichester.
