Drum
« on: Sunday 24 July 11 16:47 BST (UK) »
Hi, could someone please tell me where Drum is?  I have a Scottish Marriage Cert that says John Douglass of Drum.  Is it a place or street.  What would I look under as concerns IGI for births?  Thank you, Cathie

Drum is a hamlet between Liberton and Dalkeith, in Midlothian.

But there may be others.

Thank you for the information.  I will start with one end (Liberton) and research through to the other and see what I can find.  Again, thank you. Cathie

Hi cathie377,

what Hibee and Suzilad said is correct there are a few little cottages within the grounds possibly for workers but some are now rented out, there is of course Drum Street referred to at times as Drum. Do you know his occupaion ?.

The present Drum house was rebuilt around the middle 1700's but originally the first house or Tower was built back around the mid 1100's, Drum means a Rise or Hill. I have attached a photo from my archives for you.

Cheers.

Archie.

Hi Archie, thank you for the response.  Thank you also for the lovely picture.  John Douglas was a coal miner.  I am thinking maybe Drum the street?   He married Eleanor Coutts, 1811 in Liberton, Midlothianshire.  Problem I am having is, 41 English Census says he was born in Northumberland, England.  One of his children James born abt 1821 also married a Coutts in Peebleshire, Scotland.

This John Douglas(ss) was my GG Grandfather.  When I asked my Mother years ago about where in England he was from she would always say NO NO Scottish he was Scottish, he was from Scotland.  Soooooooooo there you go.  Again thank you for your kind response.  Cathie

P.S. Found it interesting that Drum meant rise or hill.  I was thinking of a musical instrument, silly me.
