Kate Mary Sargent born Halstead married Alfred Symonds 1882 and both were living in Halsted in 1891. Also checked for a marriage for Michael Sargent but none 1840-60. No idea where Kate/Kate Mary Sargent could have been born. Nothing shows up in vicinity of Waterford.

In 1913 Annie Monica SARGENT, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs JM SARGENT of Cairns married John Donald MURCHISON eldest son of Mr and Mrs Donald MURCHISON of Herberton.  Mrs and Miss GRANT of Mareeba were Aunt and Cousin of the bride.  The bride's father was James Matthew SARGENT - he died in 1916 and has the same parents named as Kate Mary GRANT.  He was 59 and a native of County Waterford, Ireland.

In 1919 Elizabeth Maud GRANT married William Henry MURCHISON (Mayor of Cairns 1949-1952) brother of the above and second eldest son of Donald MURCHISON.

Elizabeth Maud GRANT is on the electoral roll in Mareeba before her marriage in 1919 (waitress).  Elizabeth and William are buried at the Martyn Street Cemetery at Cairns and her age matches that of Charles and Kate's daughter.  They had a daughter who married in 1952 and she turned 90 last year.

Thanks Debra - much appreciated.

I wondered about Ireland when I could find no trace of the family in England but did not think the country could be wrong. Goes to show that every fact needs to be checked.

Thanks again

Hi Ed
I have just come across your post from 2011. And have started on the family genealogy trail two weeks ago!
Katherine “Kate” Sargent Grant was my father’s great aunt, and I live near where she and Charles Grant lived (Clohesy River) and live in the town she was buried in.

I cannot seem to find Charles Grant’s burial site, but I’m sure I will come across it eventually.

Are you aware of how he passed away?

If you are still looking for any further details, please let me know - even though I’m an absolute newbie I will do my best 😊

Death registration
Name   Charles Grant
Death Date   25 Feb. 1893
Death Place   Queensland
Registration Date   1893
Registration Place   Australia
Father   George Grant
Mother   Mary Jane Hobson
Registered 1893, 000768 page 9812

The account of his death can be read here

He was a witness in murder case at Clohesy Bridge in 1892

I cannot see a burial site for him.  I'm not very familiar with Qld registration certificates and the Qld BMD website does not say that the place of burial is recorded, as it is in some other states.

Qld Death certificates may show: "name of deceased, sex, date of death, cause of death, place of death, age, occupation, residence, place of birth"

Hi Judith
Many thanks for your detailed reply and the Qld State Library link!
Yes, it seems very difficult to ascertain where Charles Grant was buried. I’ve enquired of local historians whether there were other small (and now disused cemeteries in the area because no one lives at the settlements any longer) and am yet to hear back.
I may order his death certificate but as you said it doesn’t imply that it will have this information.

Hi Carsamus. Welcome to RootsChat

It has been awhile since I have looked at this family. About the only thing missing is the location of Charles grave . I suspect it is around Clohesy River but never recorded.
Good luck on your family research. It will be both frustrating and rewarding

I contacted the Mareeba Shire Council for a search  of all the local cemeteries
..lovely lady rang me back to say  there are no burial details for Charles Grant.

However a copy of his death certificate should say place of burial
