Lookup please - Criminal Records For Sussex & Kent 1805-1816
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 02:03 BST (UK) »
Hello all

If possible could someone lookup to see if there are any entries for a Phillis/Philladelphia Heasman/Heaseman.

I have previously found her record @ the Old Bailey in 1815 under the name of Phineas Eastmond, however before the offence in 1815 it seems she had been sent to the Refuge For The destitute for a prior crime.

Just a stab in the dark her as Phillis was born in Sussex circa 1795.

Kind regards Troods

Doing the subtraction sums for:
HEASMAN, Phillis, age 18, crime Larceny, tried at Old Bailey 13 Apr 1815, gives a birth year of 1797.

The IGI has a baptism of PHILLIS HEASMAN, 18 FEB 1798, Barcombe, Sussex, which might be her.
There is one problem however, I see in an earlier post of yours (Rootschat 2008) you have considered this but have given her parents as Thomas and Mary Heasman of Barcombe, but the IGI record states they were William and Ann.

Phillis Heasman, was one of 101 convicts transported on the Mary Ann in July 1815.
She was convicted at Middlesex Gaol Delivery for a term of 7 years on 05 April 1815
The Mary Ann departed:  July, 1815,  Destination:   New South Wales

Thanks Roy - yes I had forgotten to re - edit that post from 2008 - I also now think that the IGI entry for Phillis with parents William  & Ann is mostly likely to be my lady. At that time I think I was unsure of either entry.

Phillis married a fellow convict in Tasmania - VDL & only had 1 daughter Matilda.

Many thanks for your input Roy - much appreciated

Lets add in case you dont have it
William Heaseman aged 21 years+, servant of Hamsey, married Ann Staynes, spinster aged 25 years+ (by Licence) in Hamsey (near Barcombe) on 27 Jan 1797.   The marriage licence was sponsored by W H Thos Patchin, servant of Lewes.

In all probability, their daughter who offended and was subsequently transported, was also in service.

Looking at the list of names those transported with her, it would appear that all 101 transportees were female, most of whom were destined to become the brides of crims who had completed their sentences and thereby stop them from returning.  I often wonder how many female transportations were geremandered with this in mind?   Roy G

Blimey Roy I have never seen that info before - wow what a find.

Yes - Phillis was sent first 2 NSW where she asconded a few times then was sent to Parramatta where she took to nursing & then sent on to VDL.

Hers is a fascinating tale indeed.

Am so grateful - many thanks

No Probs butting in Omega, on this net we share everything and often get ahead by bouncing things off each other.  But if you look at my first message on this string, I had already given the same baptism details, so I have to say this is one instance in which I beat you to it.    Thank heavens for the SFHG Baptism, Burial and Marriage indexes Eh?   Roy G
