My father and uncle were the grocery shopkeepers 1950 - about 1966. The shop window is still visible (opposite the 'Crown') but is now a private house, as with the butcher's which was on the corner of High Street opposite the 'Plough'. The Post Office was still there last time I heard. While in Wolves my sister and I went to Woodfield Avenue School, then to the village school which was next to the Vicarage, opposite the 'Kings Arms'. Are all three 'hostelries' still going I wonder?

All three pubs still there...

I live a few minutes walk from Woodfield Avenue School; but I went to school at 'Greenhaven', just a little further up the Penn Road!

I,m more miffed than ever now, can't wait for the next meet-up. I only found the post by 'Truebrit' by chance, I'll have to keep my eyes open for the next one!

Sorry I couldn't make this meet (I used to love Bantock Park museum) but I will certainly be interested in any future ones so you can keep me in the loop.

On the "small world" topic, I used to live in Woodfield Avenue, all through my teens, but went to school in the town centre.

Message for truebritmega - caught your note re Smallwood occupations in and around Walsall.   My line is from William Smallwood b 1787 Walsall - ladies side saddle stirrup maker - and I wondered if you were researching the same line?

Hiya, yup I was researching that line... sadly, it turned out not to be my line.. not sure if I still have the details, but I did go fairly deep into it and yes they were ladies stirrup makers

"Dummies" guide to the Archive visit? Please.
