Grove Park Cemetery London
« on: Wednesday 20 July 11 05:59 BST (UK) »
I have been researching my husbands family for a few years and still dont have much to go on.
A couple of years ago one of his relatives gave me a black edged card with the details for a funeral, we suspect this may be his great grandfather.
The details are

Thomas Loveridge
Died March 10 1954
Aged 69 years
Interred at Grove Park Cemetery
Grave No. 378 Plot K

If there is anyone that goes to this cemetery I would love to hear from you.  I would especially like to know what the inscription on the headstone is and whether anyone else is in the plot.

Thanks for reading my post and I hope to hear something soon.

I've already relayed this to Littleacorns but thought I should put it on here as well.

Popped to the cemetery today and although I could find the area in which the plot would be, it seemed to be a grass void with a few small fallen headstones, it looked to me as if there had been movement in the ground causing the stones to fall, it is likely there are lots of unmarked graves in the area now.

Sadly many of the stones there were unreadable.

Does anyone know if there would be records of who was buried there and how we would find out.

Hi

Grove Park cemetery is managed by the London Borough of Lewisham.

Contact details (phone number) can be found here

http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/birthsdeathsmarriages/deaths/Pages/Cemeteries-and-crematoriums.aspx

As you have the full names, dates and plot details they should be ble to tell you quite easily all about the plot and whether there was ever a headstone erected.

Thanks for all the replies and advice.

I had been in touch with Lewisham Council before posting, they said they couldnt help. When researching another family member one call to Ford Cemetery in Liverpool opened up a huge amount of information, so I shall give LC another try.

Another funeral card mentions Brockley cememtery, I have contacted Friends of Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries and hope they will be able to help me.

As far as I can see there is no such groups for Grove Park or Honor Oak cemeteries.

An update on Thomas Loveridge.

I had an email from Shirley at Hither Green Crematorium, they keep the burial records for Grove Park, she informed me that Thomas had been buried in a public grave.  That the memorials on these graves were given a 15 year permit from the time of burial.

At some time in the past, probably the 1960's, many of the memorials were laid on the ground and grassed over for ease of maintenance. In the past Shirley has been able to locate a stone and uncover it but doesn't know whether that would be possible in this case.  They wouldnt know whether a memorial had ever been place on the grave as there are no records of memorials on public graves.

The burial records are kept at Hither Green Crematorium.

My original email will be passed to the supervisor at Grove Park to see if he can locate the grave and if there is a grave stone under the grass.

It is quite unusual for headstones to be placed on public graves as there are many unrelated people buried in them. Which of the many families would be responsible for the stone?
