Charles HINTON brn abt 1835
« on: Wednesday 20 July 11 00:47 BST (UK) »
Look-up request to find Charles Hinton on the 1841 or 1851 Census or a Birth record.
I know that when he got married he was registered as being 24 which puts his birth at abt 1835. He was married in West Dean Gloustershire and his father was listed as Thomas Hinton ( Labourer).

The 1861 Census shows him born in Dorestshire and the later 1871 Census shows him born in Lime Dorestshire. However to date I have found no record for him. It is also unknown as to his mothers name or if he had siblings.

Any assistance would be extremely welcomed.[/color]

All my searches for a child Charles Hinton born Dorset, with father Thomas, have not given any results. In the 1841 census there are two Charles Hintons.
One is at Martley Worcestershire with Elizabeth Hinton 35 ag lab both born Worcestershire.
The other is at Potton Biggleswade Bedfordshire working on the assumption that Charles could have been illegitimate and his stepfather named Thomas
Thomas Disher 25 Shepperd
Martha Disher 23
CHARLES HINTON 7
These 3 not born in Bedfordshire
Ann Disher 2
Emily Disher 6 months
These two born in Bedfordshire
There has been an addition of info for Thomas and Martha saying born Gambingay Cambridgeshire but nothing for Charles. I was hoping martha was born Dorset! I can't find them in 1851 as yet under Disher

Found Thomas and Martha in 1851 HO107/1753/230/24 still in Potton with two more children Martha born 1845 and Elizabeth 1843. Charles isn't with them.

SCUB THIS CHARLES. He is back in Cambridgeshire in 1851, 61 and 71. Bah.

Have to leave this for now.

Crisane, Thank you so much for your assistance. Just to let you know what I did find. Charles Hinton living with the Dishers is interesting as the Dishers are young themselves. Which may suggest he was adopted or possible relative of Martha's of Thomas's siblings.  I have tried looking for a marriage record for Thomas and Martha although no success yet.  Also states in census that Thomas was a shepherd, which would not be a leap to labrourer when Charles got married.

My other dilema is that on one cenus I think it's the 1871 cenus states he was born in Lime Dorestshire.  Now I know the cenus takers were not totally reliable and that the county is more likely to be correct as in 2 census it states Dorestshire. However the town was spelt "Lime" which there happens to be a Lime in Cheshire were there is a Thomas Hinton with Child Thomas although born later I thin 1839. So probably not it.

Really appreciate your help.  Would recommend focusing on the Dishers, as the Cheshire thing could be a red herring.  Any help locating Thomas and Marthas marriage would be appreciated as well.

Thank you so much. :)

Oh, just picked up you second post regarding Charles with the Dishers. That's a shame.
Thank you for all your research really appreciate it.

Charles Hinton really is a mystery.

I have tried talking to the oldest surving member of the family, his granddaughter to see if she ever remembers anything about her Grandfathers family ever being mentioned. Alas not as he died either before she was born or shortly after. Plus she is in her 90's and memory is failing.

Hi sallyanneh, and a (belated) warm welcome to Rootschat!

Charles doesn't show up on the earlier census for me either, so I can't help you directly.  However here's a suggestion - put your enquiry on the Dorset board and mention Lyme Regis as a possible place of birth.  It seems to be the most likely place name in Dorset.  Good luck!

Regards, Carol

PS Was he the same Charles Hinton who died aged 43, 1st qtr 1878, Monmouth v11a p19?  That would explain why his granddaughter has no knowledge of him.

Just to confirm that the Hintons in Lymm, Cheshire are almost certainly a red herring - I have a fairly complete record of the family there from 1732 to the 1900s, and the only Charles I know of was born in 1890.

Thank you to all. I really appreciate the insight and help as I am really  stuck on this one.

Rambler, thank you for clearing up the Cheshire question and yes Carol that is the same Charles Hinton, he died at age 45. I was just hoping is Granddaughter had at least heard something of her grandfathers family, alas not.

What I did realize yesterday, when trying to do some more research is that Charles Hinton was mostly likely a Baptist which is why he does not show up in the current birth records as most transcribed so far appear to be Church of England or Catholic. The reason for this deduction is due to the fact that he was married at the Baptist chapel Coleford Gloucestershire.

The following information is from the marriage certificate:

Married

9th April 1859

Charles Hinton - 24 years Bachelor - Pitsinker - Father : Thomas Hinton Labourer
Henrietta Roberts 22 years - Spinster -    Father John Roberts Stone Cutter

Charles signed his name  Charles Hinton
Henrietta made her mark X

Married at the Baptist Chapel according to the Baptist rites.
Witnesses  = Samuel Roberst  and Ann Morris

By the way Carol when you say to post on the Dorest board, do you mean within Roots Chat or are you referring me to another resource?

Thank you again to all, I truly appreciate all the information , even if it is just cancelling out the various optitions. :)
