It would have been reported in the local Fife papers. I used to ask the local studies librarian at Cupar library to look things up for me.

Looking at Alexander Black's death-certificate on Scotlandspeople, I see he was not alone, as a John Hughes aged 17 who also lived at the Shore in Pittenweem was drowned with him, and they are both described as "drowned in the sea one mile from St. Monance harbour".

Alexander Black was 23 and the son of Alexander Rattray Black and Mary Wilson. Alex. Rattray Black had a sister called Mary Black who married a William Smith of Cellardyke and I used to know a descendant of theirs. I'm a "Dyker" myself. The Blacks originated in Tayport.

The Alexander Black disaster would certainly have been reported in the local paper, the East of Fife Record, which was printed in Anstruther, and which turned into the East Fife Observer early in the 20th century. That paper has also now gone. But the Cupar library has back numbers. Can't remember their address, I'm afraid, but probably someone else here can supply details.

The Murray Library in Anstruther closed down some years ago and their old local papers were moved to Cupar, but there's a sort of library now in the Lower Town Hall in Cunzie Street, Anstruther, which recently obtained microfiches of the papers.

I found a useful posting about Fife newspapers on Rootschat from 2008.

The lady who posted the query at the top of the page asks about James Peebles who died in Tasmania in 1869. He was my great-great-grandfather! I think I know who she is.
