Help getting back beyond about 1780
« on: Tuesday 19 July 11 15:46 BST (UK) »
I've been working on this branch of the Machells on and off for about a year now, and am still stuck at about 1780.

Charles Mather Machell was born 14 October 1810 or 1811.  He was baptized 29 December 1811 at St. Mary Magdalene, Surrey.  His parents were Charles Machell and Martha Maria Laughton, who married 8 October 1809 Middlesex.  (Charles was a widower.)

Martha Maria Laughton was born/baptized 1780-1790.  I can find no information about Charles Machell, except for a submitted entry in the LDS database which gives his birth as 1784.  According to his son's baptism record and marriage record, Charles's occupation was Potter.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!
Bridget

Hi

Please advise where your St Mary Magdalen is - it is a common enough name

Do Charles Machell and Martha Maria Laughton appear in Censuses? If do what are their ages and birthplaces?

Hi Bob,
According to the IGI Charles Mather Machell was baptized Saint Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, England.
According to Ancestry he was baptized St Mary Magdalene, Southwark, Surrey.

I haven't found either of Charles Mather Machell's parents in the censuses.

I have found a death for a Martha Maria Machell in 1857 in London.  On the burial record (Nunhead Cemetery, Linden Grove, Southwark, Surrey) her age is given as 67, born 1790.  But I have also found a baptism record for Martha Maria Laughton 30 Dec 1781 St Bride Fleet Street, London.

Hello Bridget,

I haven't used this site for five years now.

Charles Machell (1775-1815) was the illegitimate son of Robert and (most probably) Martha.

I can give you more detail once I hear from you. I only myself discovered the link this morning.

How are you related to the above ?

Regards

Adrian
