Prudence SOMER

Hi can anybody help with tracing the parents of Prudence Somer who I believe was ,according to 1861 census, born in Tavistock around 1809 . She married Edward Venning in 1835 in St Clether Cornwall where she lived out her life . thanks John

I think Prudence could have been born in Tawstock not Tavistock. Looking at the census images I think they show,

1851  Tawstock
1861  Ta??stock
1871  Wastacombe

West Combe was a hamlet of Tawstock parish.

There are SOMERs living in Tawstock in 1841 and in 1851 there is a James SOMER b.1810 Tawstock, farmer of 451 acres on the page before Edward and Prudence VENNING farmer of 337 acres. Possibly Prudence's brother?

John Somer married Elizabeth Parsley 22 Dec 1806 at Stoke Damerel, Devon.  I believe these are the John (aged 89) and Elizabeth (aged 68?) living at Westacombe, Tawstock in 1841 with son Peter.  A 20yo John Somer at Exeter in 1841 is likely their son as well.  A John Somer emigrated to Victoria Australia and his death lists his parents as John Somer and Elizabeth Parsley. 

It's likely Prudence and other Somer's born at Tawstock after 1806 are from this couple.  I would be interested in what you find from the OPC about this family.

Hi sorry for the delay,  the reply that we had from the OPC was that The following baptism was recorded at Tawstock in 1809:January 25 Prudence daur of John & Elizabeth Somer.. Hope this is of some help to you . Thank you for your details on Prudence parents . In case you didn't know Prudence was married to Edward Venning in 1835 at St. Clether Cornwall . Regards Molly
