Ahhhh....well that could help you.

See the following website to find out what details it would give you.

http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

And at http://www.coraweb.com.au/bdmau.htm
you can find details for Transcription agents....transcriptions being so very much cheaper than actual certificates in Australia.

Sorry, I have just realised that Hannah COTTINGHAM and William KENNA were married in 1886 in Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1889.  I didn't spot them on a census in 1886, they were married then.

So Mike (thanks for your info about dates of death for above), do I conclude that I have the wrong great grandparents?  My grandfather (Rupert Vincent KENNA) was definitely born in Australia and as Hannah and William appear not to have immigrated, it would appear I have gone astray somewhere.

Yes, I think you've picked the wrong family, easily done.
Your relative can't belong to this family as they were all still in the UK.

You need to get the birth information for the one you know for certain is your relative, then you can start again. ;D

You'd need the death certificate transcription to be sure, but a William Joseph KENNA died in North Sydney in 1956, ref = 1956/31019
Parents = William Joseph & Ellen.

A Hannah KENNA died in Chatswood in 1962, ref = 1962/5457
Parents = Joseph & Catherine

So... not surprising that I went off track!!!  How uncanny.

I checked the two sites that you suggested in one of your posts, Dee.  They're not the most user friendly sites (or am I just getting used to all of this?).

Can you suggest why I can't find Rupert Vincent Kenna (B1904) on www.bdm.nsw.gov.au?

Maybe I have been staring at this thing too long and just need to hang up my keyboard for tonight.

He's there, Libby.....I found him....and his four siblings.

And I've found the marriage of his parents!   ;D

William Joseph KENNA married Hannah SAUNDERS at St Leonards in 1904
Ref = 1904/4841

Re the websites....the BDM information one is a bit hard to read......but just read take it slowly. Rupert's birth cert should give you lots of information.

The transcription ones I haven't actually used but many people do.
